THE GLASS CRADLE OF LIES / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - The Third Player

Julianna’s back hit the cold concrete wall of the basement corridor. The terrifying reality of her situation tightened like a snare around her neck. She had thought she was the ultimate mastermind, manipulating Marcus, framing Eleanor, and securing a fortune. But she was merely a mid-level pawn in a far vast corporate execution plot.

"The Swiss Syndicate..." Julianna breathed, her voice barely audible over the hum of the dying emergency batteries. "They were using me..."

"They used everyone," Thomas said coldly, taking a heavy step toward her, dragging the steel crowbar along the floor. The metal screeched against the concrete like a dying animal. "The Syndicate wanted the Vance-Sterling merger to fail. As long as Arthur’s bloodline lived, the merger was protected by international law. But if the entire bloodline dies in a tragic house disaster... the Syndicate swoops in and buys the pharmaceutical patents for pennies on the dollar."

"I gave you money!" Julianna shrieked, her composure breaking completely. "I can give you more! Five million! Ten million!"

"Money means nothing if I’m dead, Miss Julianna," Thomas replied, raising the crowbar. "And the Syndicate leaves no loose ends."

Before Thomas could bring the steel bar down, a heavy glass bottle shattered against the back of his head.

Thomas groaned, staggering forward as thick red blood welled up through his hair. He turned slowly, his eyes wild, to see Eleanor standing behind him in the dim corridor.

She was barely conscious, her face deathly pale, wearing only a thin white hospital gown stained with blood from her C-section incision. She was clutching an IV pole with one hand for support, while her other hand held the jagged neck of the broken glass scotch bottle she had pulled from the doctor's lounge. Her body was trembling violently from surgical shock, but her hazel eyes burned with a primal, maternal fury that defied medical explanation.

"Get... away... from my family," Eleanor gasped, her voice broken and raspy.

Thomas snarled, abandoning Julianna, and turned to face Eleanor. "You should have stayed in your coma, bitch."

He lunged forward with the crowbar. But despite her agonizing injuries, Eleanor didn't retreat. She dropped her weight, sliding across the slick concrete floor beneath Thomas’s swing, and drove the jagged glass neck of the broken bottle directly into the back of Thomas’s knee.

Thomas let out a blood-curdling shriek as the glass severed his hamstring. He collapsed heavily onto the floor, dropping the crowbar.

Julianna stared at her step-sister in sheer, unadulterated shock. The woman she had pushed through a glass table just hours ago—the woman who was supposed to be dying on an operating table—was standing in the dark corridor like a vengeful specter, bleeding, broken, yet completely unstoppable.

"Eleanor...?" Julianna stammered, paralyzed by fear.

Eleanor didn't look at Julianna. She ignored her step-sister completely, staggering past the fallen security guard toward the locked emergency doors of the neonatal ICU.

"My baby..." Eleanor sobbed, pressing her blood-stained hands against the reinforced glass window of the nursery door. Inside the dark room, the tiny incubator was silent, its digital displays black. Dr. Harrison was inside, manually squeezing a rubber oxygen bag over the baby's tiny face, his hands shaking with fatigue.

"The door is locked electronically!" Julianna yelled, running up behind Eleanor. "The main terminal was fried when Thomas cut the power! You can't open it without the manual override key!"

"Where is the key?!" Eleanor screamed, turning to grab Julianna by the collar of her cashmere sweater, pulling her close. The intensity in Eleanor’s eyes was so terrifying that Julianna actually wept in fear.

"It’s... it’s in Marcus’s private office!" Julianna sobbed. "In his desk safe!"

"Then we go get it," Eleanor growled, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute command. "Move!"
