Chapter 14 - The Bloodline War

Midnight at the Villa Vance-Sterling was defined by a quiet, militarized tension. Outside, the fog had rolled in off Lake Geneva, thick and impenetrable, swallowing the stone terraces and the rose gardens in a sea of grey shadow.

Inside the nursery on the second floor, Eleanor sat beside Victoria's wooden crib. The toddler was fast asleep, clutching a plush velvet bear, her breathing soft and rhythmic. Eleanor’s face was set in iron determination. She was wearing a dark leather jacket, her hair pulled back into a practical braid.

The nursery door opened softly. Marcus stepped in, holding two encrypted satellite phones and a tactical briefcase.

"The escape route through the mountain pass is secured," Marcus whispered. "Arthur’s old contacts in the French diplomatic corps have provided clear passports for you and Victoria. A private helicopter is landing in the upper meadow in fifteen minutes."

"What about you?" Eleanor asked, standing up and taking his hand.

"I’m staying," Marcus said, looking into her eyes with an intensity that left no room for argument. "Helena thinks she holds the leverage with those old offshore files. But she forgot one thing: I learned how to play this game from her."

"Marcus, she’s ruthless," Eleanor warned, her voice trembling slightly. "She destroyed her own daughter Julianna without a second thought."

"And I will destroy her to keep you safe," Marcus replied softly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small titanium drive. "This contains every transaction record of Helena’s Swiss Syndicate for the last twenty years—including the original wire transfers that funded the plane crash in Monaco. If she moves against us tonight, I hit 'send', and every law enforcement agency in Europe will storm this villa before sunrise."

Suddenly, the lights throughout the villa flickered twice and died completely, plunging the house into pitch blackness.

The low-frequency chime of the perimeter breach alarm echoed through the dark corridors.

"They're early," Marcus growled, drawing his sidearm from his vest. "Get Victoria to the roof landing pad! Now!"

Eleanor didn't hesitate. She scooped Victoria into her arms, wrapping her tightly in a thick wool blanket, and sprinted out of the nursery into the dark, shadow-drenched hallway.

Below, the sound of glass doors shattering on the ground floor echoed up the grand staircase, followed by the muffled THWIP-THWIP of suppressed automatic weapon fire. Helena's elite assault team had breached the lower perimeter.

Eleanor ran toward the secondary service stairs leading to the roof, her heart pounding violently against her ribs. Every shadow seemed to stretch toward her, every creak of the ancient house sounding like an approaching enemy.

As she reached the heavy iron door of the roof access stairwell, a figure stepped out from the darkness, blocking her path.

The beam of a tactical flashlight hit Eleanor directly in the eyes, blinding her.

"Going somewhere, Eleanor?" a smooth, familiar voice asked from behind the light.

It was the lead executive—the man with the scar on his forehead from the night in Boston. He held a silenced pistol aimed directly at Eleanor's chest.
