Chapter 10 - The Hidden Vault

The rain turned violent as night fell over the estate, thunder rumbling across the sky like distant artillery.
In the basement beneath the carriage house—a forgotten stone cellar that had once been used for wine storage in the nineteenth century—Thomas worked by the harsh, yellow light of a portable work lamp. The air down here was thick with damp earth, rot, and decades of dust.
He had torn down the modern drywall lining the back wall, exposing the original red brick structure beneath. Following the handwritten notes Elena had described from the journal, he searched for a loose stone three feet above the floorboards near the disused chimney flue.
CLACK. CLACK.
Using a heavy steel crowbar, Thomas hammered away at the old mortar. The dust filled his lungs, making him cough, but he didn't stop. His muscles burned with a dark, relentless energy—a father's desperate need to uncover every secret that had threatened his family.
With a loud CRACK, a large rectangular brick loosened and pulled free, falling onto the dirt floor.
Behind it lay a hollow recess in the masonry—a small, metal fireproof box secured with a mechanical combination lock.
Thomas didn't bother trying to guess the combination. He set the tip of the crowbar against the lock’s housing and brought a ten-pound sledgehammer down onto the steel handle with all the weight of his body.
BOOM.
The lock shattered under the third strike, the metal door springing open with a groan of twisted steel.
Inside lay three objects:
First, a small leather-bound ledger belonging to their late father, its pages covered in frantic, shaky handwriting documenting his growing paralysis and his suspicion of his eldest son.
Second, four sealed glass vials containing a clear, odorless liquid labeled with chemical formulas.
And third, a thick manila envelope bearing the official letterhead of a prominent international bank in Switzerland.
Thomas reached in and pulled out the envelope, opening the clasp with trembling fingers. Inside were pages of financial transfer documents detailing an offshore account containing over twelve million dollars—an account registered under the joint names of Julian Sterling... and a dummy corporate entity owned by the Chief Medical Examiner who had signed Arthur Sterling's death certificate five years ago.

It was an entire network of corruption, murder, and institutional cover-ups—a grand architecture of greed designed to ensure that Julian inherited the entirety of the Sterling fortune while wiping out anyone who stood in his path.
"You monster," Thomas whispered into the dark, damp cellar, his voice trembling with a mixture of horror and profound sorrow. "You absolute monster."
