Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

Room 412 was dark, saved for the soft, rhythmic beep of the fetal heart monitor and the amber glow of the city lights filtering through the window blinds.
Elena lay propped up against two thin pillows, her face pale as linen, dark purple circles bruised under her eyes. An IV line snaked into the back of her left hand, delivering a steady drip of saline and painkillers. Her small hands were wrapped tightly around her rounded belly, feeling the tiny, rhythmic twitches of the life inside her.
The door clicked open softly, and Thomas stepped into the room.
"Elena..." he whispered, moving to the side of the bed with a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the violence he had displayed earlier. He sat on the edge of the mattress, taking her cold, frail hand in his large palms.
"Thomas..." she breathed, her voice barely a whisper. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her temples into her hair. "Is he... is the baby..."
"He's fighting, sweetheart," Thomas said, his voice trembling as he leaned down to press his forehead gently against her knuckles. "The doctor said he's stable. You saved him, Elena. You protected him."
"Julian..." she choked out, a wave of terror passing over her features as she tried to look toward the door. "Where is Julian?"
"He's in a holding cell at the Central Precinct," Thomas said, his tone dropping into a deadly register. "He's not coming near you ever again. Leo recorded the whole thing on his phone, Elena. The police have the footage. It's over."
Elena closed her eyes, a shuddering sigh escaping her lips. But instead of relief, a deep, bitter shadow seemed to settle over her face.
"It's not over, Thomas," she whispered softly.
Thomas frowned, brow furrowing. "What do you mean? The evidence is absolute. He's going to prison for attempted murder."
Elena opened her eyes, staring up at the ceiling tiles with a hollow, haunted gaze. "He didn't just push me because he was angry about the money, Thomas. He pushed me because I found the journal."
Thomas froze. "What journal?"
"In the attic... behind the chimney flue," Elena rasped, her hand tightening around his fingers with surprising strength. "Your father's personal logs from twenty years ago. The ones Julian spent three months looking for after your father died."

Thomas felt a cold, familiar dread creep up his spine. "What did they say, Elena?"
"Your father didn't die of a heart attack, Thomas," Elena whispered, her voice dropping into a terrifying hush that seemed to freeze the room. "Julian killed him. He's been poisoning your family for twenty years."
