Chapter 14 - The Return of Life

Four months later.
The crisp autumn air blew softly through the tall oak trees surrounding the new Sterling residence—a sprawling, single-story modern home built of warm wood, glass, and stone, nestled on a quiet hilltop overlooking the lake. There were no grand staircases here. Every room flowed seamlessly into the next, bathed in natural sunlight from floor-to-ceiling windows.
In the nursery, illuminated by the warm, golden light of the late afternoon sun, Elena stood beside a carved wooden crib, holding a small bundle wrapped in a soft white blanket.
Her son, Daniel Arthur Sterling, was two weeks old. He had a mop of fine dark hair, bright, alert dark eyes, and a healthy, rosy complexion that showed no trace of the darkness that had surrounded his beginning. He rested peacefully in his mother's arms, his tiny fingers curling around her thumb as he drank from a bottle.
Thomas stepped into the nursery softly, his footsteps quiet on the thick wool rug. He wrapped his arms around Elena’s waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as they both looked down at their son.
"Leo just finished his homework," Thomas whispered softly. "He asked if he could feed Daniel his evening bottle."
"Of course," Elena smiled, turning her head to press a soft kiss against Thomas’s cheek. "He's such a wonderful big brother to him."
Leo stepped into the room moments later, wearing his comfortable school clothes, a bright smile on his face as he walked over to the armchair beside the crib. Elena gently transferred the baby into Leo’s proud, careful arms, guiding his elbows so he held the child securely.
"Look at him, Uncle Thomas," Leo beamed, looking down at the baby with absolute adoration. "He looks just like you."

"He has your courage, Leo," Thomas said, placing a warm hand on the boy's head. "Never forget that."
The small family sat together in the quiet nursery as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the room—a sanctuary built on truth, courage, and unbroken love.
