Chapter 12 - The Sanctuary of Light

Three weeks later.

The quiet, sun-drenched private garden of the St. Jude Rehabilitation Center was filled with the fresh scent of blooming jasmine and warm summer earth.

Elena sat in a comfortable, high-backed wheelchair, wrapped in a soft wool blanket despite the warmth of the day. Her skin had recovered its natural, healthy color, the deadly thallium slowly flushed from her system by days of intensive chelation therapy. Her ribs were healing, her breath coming easier now without the sharp spikes of agony that had tormented her after the fall.

Beside her, Thomas walked slowly, his hand resting gently over hers on the armrest of the wheelchair.

"The doctors said we can go home on Friday," Thomas said softly, stopping the chair beside a large stone fountain where water bubbled peacefully over carved marble.

Elena looked up at him, her golden hair catching the bright sunlight, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time in months. "Home... it feels strange to think about going back there. So much happened in that house, Thomas."

"We're selling it," Thomas said without a second's hesitation. "I've already listed the estate with an agency. Every penny from the sale will go into a trust fund for Leo's education and support. We're building a new home, Elena. Somewhere far away from those stairs. Somewhere filled with light."

Elena reached up, taking his hand and pressing it against her rounded belly.

Beneath his palm, Thomas felt a strong, unmistakable kick—a rhythmic, powerful push against the fabric of her dress that brought tears to his eyes.

"He's strong, Thomas," she whispered, her voice full of a mother's fierce, protective pride. "He survived the poison. He survived the fall. He's going to be stronger than any of us."

Thomas knelt beside her wheelchair on the gravel path, leaning his head gently against her lap, holding both his wife and his unborn child in a tight, protective embrace.

"He gets his strength from his mother," Thomas murmured, pressing a soft kiss against her dress. "Always from his mother."
