THE GRAVITY OF LIES / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - The Digital Truth

The video was short, recorded in crisp, high-definition resolution—a silent, undeniable witness to the crime.

On the small glass screen, Thomas watched the high-angle perspective from the upper hallway door. The footage captured everything: Elena standing vulnerable near the edge; Julian creeping up behind her like a shadow; the silent, terrifying exchange of words; and then, the deliberate, violent extension of Julian’s arms as he shoved her with full force down the staircase.

The video didn't lie. It didn't have a bias. It didn't listen to Julian’s smooth, poisonous rationalizations. It simply laid bare the naked, sickening truth of an attempted murder.

Thomas stared at the screen for five endless seconds, his face illuminated by the cold blue light of the phone. His expression shifted from wild rage to a dark, terrifying calmness—the kind of stillness that precedes an absolute collapse of civilization.

He slowly turned his head toward the landing, looking up at Julian.

Julian was shrinking back against the banister, his hands raised in a pathetic, desperate gesture of surrender. "Thomas... listen to me... we can fix this... we're family..."

Thomas walked slowly toward the stairs, holding the phone firmly in his left hand while his right hand flexed into a tight, white-knuckled fist. The warm, ambient lighting of the hallway caught the harsh, uncompromising angles of his face as he zoomed in on Julian’s terrified eyes.

"Now," Thomas said, his voice dropping into an icy, deadly register that vibrated through the floorboards. "Lie again."

Julian opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The lies that had sustained him for decades—the intricate webs of deceit, the psychological games, the subtle manipulations—had all collapsed under the weight of fifteen seconds of digital video.

Behind Thomas, the heavy front door burst open.

Two uniformed police officers, summoned by the automated alarm system that Elena had triggered from her phone before the fall, stepped into the foyer with their weapons drawn, their heavy boots thudding against the floor.

"Police! Nobody move!" the lead officer bellowed, his eyes quickly scanning the blood on the stairs, the woman on the floor, and the two men locked in a deadly standoff.

Thomas didn't look at the officers. He kept his eyes locked on Julian’s face, his voice carrying over the sound of the officers’ radio chatter.

"Officer," Thomas said, holding up the phone for the police to see, "arrest this man for attempted murder."
