Chapter 11 - The Tipping Point

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting long, dramatic beams of light through the high windows of the county courtroom.
The room was packed to capacity with press reporters, legal teams, and curious observers from the city's high-society circles. The scandal of the Sterling family had exploded across every news outlet overnight—a tragic, sensational story of wealth, poison, attempted murder, and family betrayal.
Julian sat at the defense table, wearing a crisp orange jumpsuit over his tall frame. His jaw was still heavily bandaged, restricting his movements, but his posture had regained some of its cold, arrogant rigidity. Beside him sat a high-priced defense attorney provided by his firm, whispering frantically into his ear.
Across the room, sitting in the front row of the gallery, was Thomas. He wore a dark black suit, his expression completely unreadable, his eyes fixed on his brother like a hawk watching its prey.
The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open, and Judge Harrison stepped up to the bench, his black robes billowing behind him as the bailiff instructed everyone to rise.
"In the matter of the State v. Julian Sterling," Judge Harrison declared, his deep voice filling the vaulted room. "We are here to consider the prosecution’s motion to amend the charges based on newly submitted forensic evidence."
The Prosecutor—a sharp, middle-aged woman named Sarah Lin—stood up from her table, holding a thick file of medical reports.
"Your Honor," Prosecutor Lin began, her voice ringing clearly through the chamber. "Late last night, forensic toxicologists at St. Jude Medical Center completed a comprehensive heavy-metal panel on the victim, Elena Sterling. The results confirmed the presence of thallium sulfate in her bloodstream at near-fatal levels."
A low murmur rippled through the gallery. Reporters began scribbling frantically on their pads.
"Furthermore," Lin continued, raising her voice over the noise, "search warrants executed at the defendant's estate uncovered the source of the poison, along with financial records linking the defendant to the systemic poisoning and murder of his father, Arthur Sterling, five years ago."
Julian’s defense attorney jumped to his feet, hands raised in protest. "Objection, Your Honor! These allegations regarding the defendant's late father are unproven, highly prejudicial, and completely irrelevant to the bail hearing today!"
"Irrelevant, Counsel?" Prosecutor Lin shot back, turning to face the defense with lethal precision. "The defendant was caught on high-definition video attempting to throw his pregnant sister-in-law down a flight of stairs after his months-long attempt to poison her failed to act quickly enough. This is not a case of a sudden domestic dispute. This is a pattern of serial murder executed for financial gain!"
Judge Harrison slammed his wooden gavel down with a sharp, thunderous BANG.
"Order in the court!" the judge bellowed. He looked down at Julian with a look of cold, uncompromising severity. "Bail is denied, Mr. Sterling. The defendant will remain remanded in custody at the Blackwood Maximum Security Facility pending trial for attempted capital murder and first-degree murder."
Julian’s eyes widened behind his bandages. He turned his head slowly, looking back toward the gallery, his eyes locking onto Thomas.

Thomas didn't flinch. He didn't smile. He simply raised his hand, making a slow, deliberate gesture—pointing two fingers directly at his own eyes, then shifting them to point at Julian.
I am watching you.
