Chapter 2 - The Cascading Dark

The descent was not a smooth glide; it was a brutal, bone-shattering collision with hard edges and unforgiving wood.
Elena pitched backward, her arms flailing wildly in a desperate, instinctual attempt to cushion her fall or catch a spindle. Her spine hit the lip of the fifth step down with a sickening THUD, driving the air out of her chest in a ragged gasp. The impact spun her sideways, her hip slamming viciously into the risers as she tumbled head over heels, a blur of beige fabric, golden hair, and terror.
THACK. CLACK. THUD.
Each step was a hammer blow to her body. Pain exploded in bright, blinding flashes behind her eyes—white-hot lightning radiating from her bruised ribs down to her pelvis. But amidst the chaotic horror of the fall, one primal instinct overridden everything else: she curled her arms tightly around her stomach, tucking her chin into her chest, creating a human shield out of her own torso to protect the fragile life inside her.
She hit the bottom of the staircase with a devastating crash, her body sliding across the slick hardwood floor of the main foyer before coming to a violent halt against the base of the entryway console table.
A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the grand hallway for a fraction of a second, broken only by the sharp, metallic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.
Elena lay curled on her side in a fetal position, her forehead pressed against the cold floorboards. Her breath came in shallow, panicked hitches, her chest heaving as she fought against the crushing agony in her lower back. Dark spots danced across her vision. She clutching her abdomen with both hands, her fingers digging desperately into the beige wool of her top, searching for any sign of movement, any reassurance that the tiny heart beating inside her hadn't been extinguished by the violent impact.
"My baby..." she sobbed, the sound muffled by the floor. Tears streamed down her cheeks, washing away her composure, leaving behind the raw, visceral pain of a mother caught in a nightmare. "Oh God... please... please..."
A door down the hall slammed open with violent force, the heavy wood crashing against the baseboard.
Fast, frantic footsteps echoed across the floorboards. Thomas burst into the foyer, his grey dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his face pale as chalk as his eyes registered the horrifying scene at the base of the stairs. His pen dropped from his hand, clattering uselessly onto the rug.
"Elena!" he screamed, his voice breaking into a jagged roar of pure anguish.

He dropped to his knees beside her, his long limbs trembling as he hovered over her broken form, terrified that touching her might cause further damage. His hands hovered inches above her shoulders, shaking violently. "Elena! Oh God, Elena, don't move! Don't move!"
"Thomas..." she choked out, turning her tear-streaked face toward him. Her skin was ghastly white, slick with a cold sweat. She reached up with a trembling, dust-stained hand, her fingers gripping the lapel of his grey shirt with terrifying strength. "He... he pushed me..."
