Chapter 1 - Beneath the Stainless Steel

The air inside Operating Room 4 of Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital tasted of ozone, stale antiseptic, and the unmistakable metallic twang of fresh blood. Sterile fluorescent lights hung overhead, buzzing at an irritating frequency that vibrated straight into Maya’s skull. The surgical lamps cast a cold, clinical blue hue over the glossy epoxy floor, turning every reflection into a fractured, icy mirror.
Maya pressed her spine flat against the freezing concrete floor, wedged in the six-inch clearance beneath a heavy stainless steel medical gurney. Her breath came in jagged, silent gasps, each inhale dragging against her fractured ribs like jagged glass. She dug her fingers into the coarse fabric of her dark grey hoodie, pressing her knuckles into her teeth to silence her own whimpers. Through the gap in her sleeve, the dark purple contusions on her cheek and neck throbbed violently—bruises gifted to her by the man in the leather gloves less than twenty minutes ago.
Directly above her, thin vinyl sheets rustled violently.
A leather-gloved hand—black, supple, and utterly devoid of human warmth—snapped out from the shadows, violently cupping the lower half of seven-year-old Lily’s face. The child’s pale blue hospital gown fluttered as her small body thrashed against the gurney’s frame. Lily’s golden curls brushed the edge of the steel railing, visible to Maya from below. The little girl’s muffled cries leaked through the tight leather grip, high-pitched and terrified.
Maya squeezed her eyes shut, hot tears cutting clean tracks through the dried blood on her face. Don't move, she ordered herself, the voice in her head a frantic, instinctual scream. If you move, she kills you both.
A heavy set of footsteps approached. The rhythmic, deliberate click of stiletto heels echoed against the sterile tiles, sharp as gunshots in the vast, soundproofed room.
The boots stopped inches from the gurney's wheels. Maya caught the pristine white edge of a tailored suit trousers hem, stark against the dark leather of black gloves.
The gloved hand released Lily's mouth, but grabbed the collar of the child's hospital gown instead, hauling the small girl upright with terrifying physical strength.
"Tell me..." Eleanor Vance’s voice purred—smooth, aristocratic, and thoroughly poisoned by decades of untouchable authority. "Where is she hiding?"
Lily choked back a sob, her chest heaving as she clawed at her grandmother’s immaculate white sleeve. Her tiny voice cracked, echoing off the tiled walls. "She's gone! Don't touch me, Grandma!"
"Don't lie to me, child," Eleanor whispered softly, leaning in close. "You know what happens to little girls who tell lies in this family."
To emphasize her words, Eleanor shifted her weight. Her black leather high heel came down directly onto a small yellow toy Hummer that had slipped from Lily’s pocket. The hard plastic shattered under the pristine leather sole with a sickening crunch, the sound echoing through the hollow room like breaking bone.

Below the gurney, Maya opened her eyes wider, her pupils dilating in sheer horror as a shard of yellow plastic skittered under the bed and struck her forehead.
"Oh God," Maya whispered into her own hand, her voice barely a breath.
