Chapter 2 - The Pedigree of Shadows

Twenty-four hours before she found herself hiding beneath a surgical bed, Maya Lin was an underpaid archival clerk at the Vance Biotech Foundation. Her job was mundane: digitizing forty-year-old clinical trial logs from the firm’s legacy facilities in Eastern Europe. She was invisible, ordinary, and thoroughly uninteresting to the high-society monsters who inhabited the top floors of the Manhattan skyscraper.

Until she opened File 88-Delta.

The document wasn't supposed to exist. It was an encrypted neurological tracking ledger dating back to 1994, detailing the experimental administration of synthetic neuro-pathogens into orphaned infants. But what made Maya’s heart stop wasn't the medical jargon; it was the name listed as the lead clinical trial director: Dr. Eleanor Vance.

Attached to the file were recent pediatric brain scans belonging to Lily Vance—Eleanor’s granddaughter and the sole heiress to the vast Vance pharmaceutical fortune. Attached to those scans was a horrifying diagnosis: early-stage neurological degeneration, artificially induced.

Maya had realized the horrific truth in an instant. Lily wasn't just Eleanor’s granddaughter; she was an ongoing, living experiment. Eleanor was intentionally poisoning the child’s nervous system to test a proprietary, multi-billion-dollar reversal serum, preparing to market it to the highest bidders in international defense networks.

When Maya tried to copy the files onto an external drive, the facility went into lockdown. Within an hour, Maya’s apartment was ransacked, her roommate was dead on the kitchen floor, and Maya was running for her life through the rain-slicked alleys of New York with a USB drive tucked into her sock.

She had tracked Lily to Saint Jude’s—a private, high-security medical center owned entirely by the Vance family. Maya had snuck into the pediatric wing under the cover of a shift change, intending to grab the child and take her straight to the FBI.

She had underestimated how fast Eleanor Vance moved.

Now, trapped in OR 4, Maya realized the terrifying scope of Eleanor's control. The entire floor had been cleared. The surgical staff had been dismissed or paid off. The hospital was no longer a place of healing; it was a private slaughterhouse.

Above her, Eleanor dropped Lily back onto the gurney. The child wept silently, curling into a ball.

"Search the sub-basement," Eleanor commanded, her voice turning away from the bed toward the heavy double doors of the operating room. "She couldn't have left the building. The perimeter is sealed. Bring her to me alive—I want to know who else read those files."
