Chapter 8 - The Price of Silence

Maya stepped out from behind the brick housing, holding the MP5 at her hip, keeping her body positioned to block Eleanor’s view of Lily.
"It wasn't research, Eleanor!" Maya shouted over the roar of the storm. "It was torture! You poisoned your own daughter, and when she found out, you had her killed! Now you're doing the exact same thing to her child!"
Eleanor’s face didn't register guilt, shame, or even anger. Her expression remained entirely smooth—the face of a psychopath who viewed human beings as nothing more than raw material for profit.
"My daughter was weak," Eleanor said coldly, raising the silver revolver. "She possessed a bleeding heart that would have destroyed this family's legacy. And Lily... Lily is my creation. Her biological structure belongs to the Vance Foundation. You cannot steal what is legally mine, Miss Lin."
"She isn't a property!" Maya yelled, her finger tightening on the trigger of her weapon. "She's a little girl!"
"She is a vector!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic veneer finally slipping to reveal the howling void beneath. "A vector for a cure that will redefine human warfare! Do you think the men who fund my foundation care about one little girl? They care about results! And tonight, the results die with you!"
"Drop the gun, Eleanor!" a new voice shouted from the roof access door.
Eleanor turned her head slightly, her eyes narrowing.
Standing in the doorway, soaked in rain, was Detective Marcus Reed of the NYPD Homicide Division. He held his service weapon in a two-handed grip, behind him stood four armed tactical officers from the city's quick response unit.
"Put it down, Mrs. Vance!" Reed ordered. "We have the building surrounded. Your security team downstairs has already surrendered."

Maya felt a sudden rush of relief wash over her, but before she could drop her guard, she saw the shift in Eleanor’s eyes.
Eleanor wasn't afraid. She didn't look like a woman who had lost. She looked like a woman who had reached the final, inevitable stage of an experiment.
