Chapter 11 - The Phantom Vault

While the public narrative focused on the tragic "accidental death" of industrialist Eleanor Vance and the subsequent corporate scandal, the true horror of the Hydatid Protocol remained buried deep within the digital infrastructure of the global financial network.

A week after her release from the hospital, Maya sat in a quiet, sunlit apartment in Brooklyn provided under the federal witness protection program. Her shoulder was healing, but the psychological scars were deep, jagged, and fresh.

Her laptop sat open on the kitchen table.

Despite the FBI’s thorough seizure of Vance Biotech’s primary servers, Maya’s archival instincts remained twitching like a phantom limb. She knew how Eleanor Vance worked; a woman who spent forty years building a global extortion ring would never trust her primary secrets to a single server or a single USB drive.

Maya opened a terminal window, connecting to an encrypted node she had uncovered three months prior while cataloging legacy files from the firm's defunct Munich office.

The screen flickered, prompting for a twenty-four-character alphanumeric key.

Maya looked at the yellow toy car Lily had left on her desk as a keepsake. On the undercarriage of the toy, etched into the soft plastic in microscopic letters—something she had noticed while cleaning the toy—was a serial code.

Maya typed the characters into the prompt: HV-1994-LILY-DELTA-00.

The terminal blinked green.

ACCESS GRANTED. WELCOME, DIRECTOR VANCE.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. The screen populated with a live directory of over forty private medical facilities scattered across South America, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia.
