Chapter 4 - The Anesthesia Corridor

They slipped into the hallway, moving like ghosts against the polished white walls. Maya kept them low, navigating the maze of sterile corridors toward the secondary service stairwell at the far end of the wing.

The air in the hospital felt thicker now, heavy with an unnatural silence. Every shadow cast by the overhead emergency lights looked like a crouching man; every hum of the ventilation system sounded like approaching footsteps.

"Maya," Lily whispered, her tiny hand cold inside Maya’s grip. "My head hurts."

Maya stopped, dropping to one knee to look at the child. In the bright hallway lights, Lily’s skin looked alarmingly pale, almost translucent. Dark shadows ringed her eyes, and her small lips possessed a faint blue tint.

The pathogen, Maya realized with a sickening lurch in her stomach. Eleanor didn't just test her in the past—she's escalating the dosage tonight.

"Hang on, baby," Maya begged, pulling the child against her chest. "Just a little further."

Suddenly, a metallic click echoed from the intersection twenty yards ahead.

Maya froze.

A tall man in an unmarked black tactical uniform stepped into the hallway. He carried a suppressed submachine gun slung across his chest, his hands encased in the same black leather gloves Eleanor wore. He didn't look like a security guard; he looked like a soldier trained for black-budget liquidations.

The mercenary’s eyes locked onto Maya and the child. He didn't hesitate, raising the weapon to his shoulder in a single, fluid motion.

"Down!" Maya screamed, tackling Lily into an open doorway on their right just as the muted thwack-thwack-thwack of suppressed gunfire tore through the air.

Glass shattered everywhere. The door frame exploded into splinters of wood and drywall as Maya and Lily tumbled onto the floor of an equipment storage room.

Maya scrambled backward, slamming her foot against the heavy wooden door to force it shut, throwing the brass manual lock just as a heavy body slammed into the outside frame.
