Chapter 10 - The Fragmented Ledger

Three days later.
The private ICU room on the eighth floor of Bellevue Hospital was quiet, save for the steady, rhythmic beep of the cardiac monitor beside Maya’s bed.
Sunlight poured through the high windows, washing away the cold, blue nightmare of Saint Jude’s. Maya lay back against the white pillows, her left shoulder heavily bandaged, her skin still pale, but her eyes sharp and clear.
Detective Reed sat in a vinyl chair beside the bed, two thick manila folders resting in his lap.
"The federal grand jury was convened this morning," Reed said, his voice quiet. "The contents of that USB drive... Jesus, Maya. It wasn't just Vance Biotech. It implicated three sitting senators, two major pharmaceutical boards, and a private defense contractor in Zurich."
Maya looked at him, her chest tight. "What happens to Lily?"
Reed smiled—a genuine, warm expression that erased the tired lines on his face. "Her mother’s brother—a marine biologist living in Washington state—flew in yesterday. He didn't even know Lily existed because Eleanor kept the child completely isolated from that side of the family. He’s a good man, Maya. He’s applying for full legal guardianship."
The heavy wooden door of the hospital room clicked open.
Lily stepped into the room, holding her uncle's hand. She was wearing a bright yellow sweater, her golden curls neatly brushed, a small stuffed bear tucked under her arm.
When she saw Maya awake, her face lit up. She let go of her uncle's hand and ran across the linoleum floor, carefully climbing onto the edge of Maya’s bed, taking great care not to touch her bandaged shoulder.
"Look," Lily whispered proudly, holding up her other hand.
In her tiny palm sat a brand new yellow toy Hummer—a perfect replica of the one Eleanor had crushed beneath her heel in OR 4.
"Uncle David bought it for me," Lily said, her wide brown eyes shining with safety and trust. "He said we're going to live near the ocean."

Maya felt a hot tear escape her eye, but this time, it wasn't born of fear. She reached out, wrapping her hand around Lily’s small fingers.
"That sounds wonderful, Lily," Maya whispered.
