Chapter 12 - The Cold Synthesis

Maya stared at the scrolling names, her stomach churning as the true scale of Eleanor’s monstrous legacy revealed itself.

Saint Jude’s had merely been the flagship facility—the executive showcase where Eleanor tested the primary strains on her own genetic line to prove the pathogen's stability to private defense buyers.

The digital directory showed live telemetry data: body temperatures, white blood cell counts, and neurological responsiveness scores streaming in real-time from clinics in Bogota, Bucharest, and Manila.

A small notification window popped up in the corner of her screen.

INCOMING ENCRYPTED FILE TRANSMISSION... SOURCE: NODE-01 (GENEVA).

Maya clicked the file.

A video window opened. The camera was positioned in a dimly lit, high-tech laboratory. Sitting behind a sleek stainless steel desk was a man in his late fifties, wearing an immaculate dark grey suit. His face was cold, refined, and possessed the exact same predatory blue eyes as Eleanor Vance.

"Hello, Miss Lin," the man said, his voice smooth, cultured, and devoid of accent. "I am Julian Vance. Eleanor was my sister."

Maya’s hand froze over the trackpad.

"If you are viewing this file," Julian continued, leaning forward into the camera's light, "it means my sister failed to contain you, and her domestic apparatus has been dismantled by federal authorities. A regrettable inconvenience, but ultimately irrelevant to the broader market deployment."

Julian gestured to a bank of glass containment units behind him, inside of which sat dozens of glowing blue vials—the completed reversal serum.

"You possess the administrative key, Miss Lin," Julian said softly. "The FBI believes the threat is over. They believe my sister was a rogue actor. But you know the truth. You hold the leash to six hundred children across the globe. You can publish the key and cause the immediate termination of those clinical programs by terrified facility directors... or you can bring the drive to Geneva, and take my sister's seat at the board."
