Chapter 11 - The Grandmaster's Move

Julian did not lower his pistol. He kept the sight aligned with Croft’s chest, but his eyes shifted to Arthur Sterling standing five feet away on the cellar stairs.
"Arthur," Julian said, his voice cold as ice. "You sent your own sister to my house to abuse my child."
"Victoria is an idiot," Arthur said dismissively, leaning his weight onto his silver cane. "She let her emotions get involved. She was envious of your late wife, envious of that young nanny, envious of the boy. I told her to play the long game, but she insisted on creating that ridiculous drama with the Ming vase tonight to force my hand."
Arthur took another step down the stone stairs, his leather shoes clicking on the damp floor.
"She thought she was clever," Arthur continued with a dry laugh. "Smashing Eleanor’s vase... cutting her own arm... locking Noah in a closet. She wanted to feel like a mastermind. But she was just a wrecking ball I used to loosen your foundation."
"And Eleanor?" Julian asked, his voice trembling with a dark, suppressed fury. "You killed my wife."
Arthur paused, a cold, mocking smile playing at the corners of his thin lips. "Eleanor found the offshore ledgers. She was going to federal prosecutors in Boston. Her car accident was a necessary corporate adjustment, Julian. Just as tonight is a necessary restructuring."
"You won't get away with this," Julian said.
"I already have," Arthur said smoothly. He pulled a gold pocket watch from his vest, checking the time. "In four minutes, a private helicopter will land at the airfield three miles from here. Croft will press that button, the house will collapse, and the news tomorrow will report that Julian Vance, overwhelmed by grief and his wife's arrest, detonated his own home in a murder-suicide."
"And Noah?" Julian’s voice dropped into a terrifying register.
"Noah will be raised in a quiet private institute in Zurich," Arthur said without a trace of remorse. "Under my guardianship. Managing his inherited trust until he reaches legal age... at which point he will suffer a tragic swimming accident."
Julian’s chest burned with a rage so hot it threatened to consume his self-control. But he knew that one wrong movement would trigger Croft’s detonator.
Behind Arthur, at the top of the cellar stairs, a small shadow moved in the dark hallway above.
It was Maya Lin.
She stood at the top of the stone steps, holding her silenced weapon, pointing it directly down at the back of Arthur Sterling’s head.
Beside her stood young Noah, holding his father’s black aluminum remote control—the hub device that controlled the house’s smart systems.
Noah looked down into the red-lit cellar, seeing his father standing at gunpoint, seeing the man who had ordered him locked in the dark.

The child did not tremble. The child did not cry.
Noah tapped a button on the aluminum remote.
