Chapter 4 - The Echoes in the Wardrobe

The quiet that settled over the Vance mansion after the police cruisers drove away was not peaceful; it was heavy, suffocating, and thick with unresolved horror.

Inside the master suite, Julian sat on the edge of the plush king-sized bed, his elbows resting on his knees, his hands clasped tightly together. Noah was sound asleep in his own bedroom down the hall, guarded by Elena, who refused to leave the boy’s side despite Julian’s insistence that she rest.

Julian’s mind was racing through the wreckage of the last two years. He stared at the dark polished floorboards of his bedroom, his jaw tight. The slap he had delivered to Victoria had been an instinctive explosion of rage, a violent reflex of a father protecting his child. But beneath the anger lay a terrifying realization: Victoria had not acted alone.

Victoria was smart, but she was not a criminal mastermind. The financial maneuvers she had attempted over the past six months—redirecting small streams of capital from the Vance holdings into offshore accounts—required technical expertise far beyond her background in art history.

Julian stood up, walking silently into the walk-in wardrobe where Noah had been locked away just hours ago. He turned on the recessed overhead lights. The smell of cedar and expensive fabric hit him, but now it felt like the scent of a crime scene.

He knelt down near the baseboard where Noah had activated the emergency release latch. As he adjusted his glasses to inspect the mechanism, something caught his eye under the bottom shoe rack.

A small, sleek black object was jammed into the crease between the wall trim and the built-in shelving.

Julian reached in with two fingers, pulling the item into the light.

It was a encrypted military-grade audio relay bug—not a consumer-grade recording device, but a specialized transmitter designed for long-range covert intelligence monitoring.

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a heavy piston.

Victoria hadn't just locked Noah in the closet to isolate him during her theatrical setup with Elena. She had locked him in the wardrobe because that was where the master microphone was planted. Someone outside the house had been listening in real-time to every cry, every whisper, every word spoken in that wing of the mansion for months.

Julian flipped the device over. On the back casing, etched into the dark matte plastic, was a tiny logo: a stylized silver falcon holding an hourglass.

The mark of House Sterling—the security firm owned by Victoria’s estranged elder brother, Arthur Sterling.

Julian’s phone vibrated in his jacket pocket. The screen lit up with an unlisted number from a private satellite trunk line.

He swiped the screen, placing the phone to his ear without speaking.

"She failed, didn't she?" a dark, gravelly male voice spoke through the speaker—a voice Julian recognized instantly as Arthur Sterling's.

"She's in police custody, Arthur," Julian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, low murmur. "And I just found your bug in my son's wardrobe."

A slow, chilling chuckle echoed through the line. "Victoria was always too theatrical for her own good. She thought smashing a vase would fix her problems. But you're missing the bigger picture, Julian. Check your third-floor server room. The camera feed you watched wasn't the only file executing on that circuit tonight."

The line went dead with a hollow click.
