Chapter 9 - The Shadows of the Nursery

On the second floor, inside Noah’s nursery, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

The room was decorated in soft navy blue tones, with wooden toy shelves, a high-end educational desk, and a large plush rug covering the floor. But now, it was a fortress under siege.

Maya Lin stood near the heavy oak door, her silenced handgun raised, her eyes fixed on the hallway outside the cracked doorframe. Behind her, inside the walk-in bathroom, Elena sat on the tiled floor, holding Noah tightly in her lap.

The boy was awake now, his small arms wrapped around Elena’s neck, his blue cloud pajamas stained with the dust of the closet he had been freed from earlier. He didn't cry. The trauma of the evening had rendered him eerily quiet, his wide blue eyes staring at the crack of light beneath the door.

"Is Daddy fighting the bad people?" Noah whispered softly into Elena’s shoulder.

"Daddy is very strong, Noah," Elena murmured, stroking the back of the child's head, her own heart hammering violently against her ribs. "Daddy is protecting us."

Downstairs, a heavy explosion rocked the lower frame of the house—a breaching charge detonating against the basement door. The entire floor beneath their feet trembled.

"They're inside the lower level," Maya said quietly without turning her head. She checked the tactical display on her watch. "Arthur’s team is trying to reach the manual detonation board beneath the wine cellar."

Suddenly, the door to the nursery creaked open two inches.

Maya’s finger tightened on her trigger. "Julian?"

A figure stepped into the room—not Julian, but a tall, broad-shouldered operative wearing a tactical vest and a dark balaclava. He held a silenced pistol in his right hand.

He had bypassed the main stairwell fight by climbing the exterior trellis onto the second-floor balcony.

"Drop the weapon," the operative commanded, his voice cold and raspy through his mask.

Maya didn't hesitate. She fired once.

PTH

The bullet grazed the operative’s shoulder, tearing through his tactical nylon strap. He grunted in pain, lunging forward with terrifying speed, slamming his heavy body into Maya.

The impact drove Maya back against the wooden toy shelf, knocking her handgun from her grip. It clattered across the floor, sliding straight under the bed.

The operative raised his weapon, pointing it directly at Maya’s forehead.

"Where is the silver book?" he growled.

Behind him, from the doorway of the bathroom, a small voice broke the silence.

"Don't hurt her!"

The operative turned his head slightly toward the sound.

Elena was standing in the doorway holding a heavy, brass decorative globe from Noah’s desk. With a scream of pure, desperate fury, the young nanny swung the heavy brass stand with all her strength, striking the operative squarely across the side of his helmeted head.

The blow didn't knock him out, but it shattered his balance. He stumbled sideways.

Maya instantly swept his left leg with a sharp kick, driving her elbow into his exposed throat. The operative collapsed onto the plush rug, gasping for air, dropping his weapon.

Maya seized the dropped gun from the floor, turned it on the downed operative, and squeezed the trigger twice.

The room went quiet again, save for the heavy breathing of the two women.

Noah stepped out from the bathroom, looking down at the fallen intruder, then up at Elena.

"You saved us, Elena," Noah whispered.

Elena dropped the brass globe, collapsing to her knees, pulling the boy into a fierce, tearful embrace. "I will always save you, Noah. Always."
