Chapter 5 - The Digital Breach

Julian charged up the marble staircase to the third floor, taking three steps at a time, his heavy leather boots thudding against the wood.
The server room was tucked behind a concealed door disguised as a bookcase in his private study. He punched his six-digit code into the hidden keypad, placed his thumb against the biometric scanner, and pushed the reinforced steel door open.
Inside, the room was cool, maintained at a strict sixty-two degrees Fahrenheit, filled with the soft, steady hum of four server racks blinking with green and blue LED lights. This was the digital heart of the Vance empire—housing not only the estate's surveillance archives, but also the encrypted databases of his commercial real estate transactions across three continents.
Julian stepped up to the main terminal console, tapping the mechanical keyboard to wake the monitors.
What he saw on the screens made his blood run cold.
A massive data transfer protocol had been initiated eighteen minutes ago—exactly three minutes after Victoria was led out of the house in handcuffs. The screen displayed a red progress bar sliding across the interface:
FILE TRANSFER IN PROGRESS: VANCE_GLOBAL_TRUST_ASSETS.ENC
PROGRESS: 84%
DESTINATION: UNRACEABLE_DARKNET_NODE_09
Victoria’s arrest had not stopped the operation; it had triggered it.
The incident in the hallway—locking Noah in the closet, breaking the Ming vase, framing Elena—had all been a elaborate, sacrificial distraction designed to draw Julian out of his study and force him to access the master security screen in the hallway. When Julian had pulled out his master remote control and accessed the encrypted camera archives, the remote’s wireless handshake had broadcast his primary authorization tokens straight into the house's local network.
Arthur Sterling had used his sister as bait to steal Julian’s master cryptographic keys.
"No," Julian growled, his hands flying across the keyboard as he attempted to execute a manual hard shutdown of the core servers.
ACCESS DENIED: SYSTEM LOCKED BY SECONDARY ADMINISTRATIVE PROTOCOL.
A pop-up window appeared in the center of the main display. A live text window began to generate lines of code:
> Sterling_Node_Admin: Thank you for unlocking the vault, Julian.
> Sterling_Node_Admin: Eleanor’s death was stage one.
> Sterling_Node_Admin: Victoria’s arrest was stage two.
> Sterling_Node_Admin: Stage three begins when the clock hits zero.
Julian stared at the mention of his late wife’s name—Eleanor.
His hands froze over the keyboard. His vision blurred with a sudden, suffocating surge of grief and rage. Eleanor had not died in a tragic accident. The car crash in Aspen... the failed brakes... the slippery road... it had all been orchestrated by the Sterling family to pave the way for Victoria to enter his life and infiltrate his financial network.
"You monsters," Julian whispered to the empty room.
He grabbed an industrial steel crowbar resting near the server rack maintenance kit, lifted it high above his head, and smashed it directly through the main server controller board.
Sparks erupted in a bright shower of blue and white light. The hum of the cooling fans died instantly. The monitors flickered and went black.
The hard drive transfer stopped at 89%.

Julian stood in the dim, smoky room, his chest heaving, holding the bent crowbar. He had stopped the complete theft of his empire, but he had opened Pandora's box. The war was no longer domestic; it was an existential struggle for his family's survival.
Downstairs, the front doorbell rang—a slow, deliberate chime that echoed through the empty house.
