Chapter 8 - The Siege of Kensington

The lights inside the Vance mansion did not flicker out; they died simultaneously as the main power feed from the street was severed from the outside junction box.
The warm, yellow interior illumination vanished, plunging the grand hallway into deep, shadow-drenched gloom, lit only by the faint silver moonlight filtering through the high arch windows.
Downstairs, the soft sound of glass shattering echoed from the rear conservatory.
Julian moved instantly. He grabbed his Kimber 9mm pistol from the table, chambering a round with a sharp, metallic clack. He reached out, grabbing Maya by the arm, pulling her into the shadow of the grand staircase.
"Get upstairs to Noah’s room," Julian ordered in a low, fierce whisper. "Lock the reinforced door. Take Elena and Noah into the panic closet inside his bathroom."
"I have a weapon," Maya whispered back, reaching into her trench coat pocket and pulling out a compact, silenced subcompact handgun. "I can cover the stairwell."
"No," Julian said, his eyes locking onto hers in the dark. "If they get past me on these stairs, nobody leaves this house alive. Protect my son."
Maya did not argue. She turned silently, darting up the marble steps like a phantom, her soft-soled shoes making no sound against the dark wood.
Julian crouched behind the thick oak balustrade at the base of the staircase, his breath slow, his ears tuned to every vibration in the house.
Through the darkness of the open living room, three dark figures moved with military precision. They wore light tactical gear, black fatigues, and low-profile night-vision goggles. They moved without light, their silenced carbines held at the low-ready position, sweeping the room with lethal efficiency.
They were not common burglars. They were Arthur Sterling’s private security contractors—former special operations operatives hired to clean up corporate failures.
"Target one is Julian Vance," a muffled voice spoke through a tactical headset in the dark. "Search and destroy. Secure the silver notebook. Plant the secondary manual detonator on the basement pillar."
Julian held his breath. He counted three men in the living room.
The lead operative stepped into the grand hallway, his boots stepping directly onto the blue-and-white porcelain shards of the broken Ming vase.
CRUNCH.
The sharp sound of breaking ceramic echoed in the dark corridor.
The operative froze, lowering his weapon toward the floor.
That fraction of a second was all Julian needed.
Julian leaned out from behind the stairwell balustrade and fired two rapid shots.
BANG! BANG!
The muzzle flashes illuminated the hallway in bright, blinding orange bursts. The two 9mm rounds struck the lead operative squarely in the chest plate, the force knocking him backward onto the oak floorboards.
"Contact! Stairs!" the second operative yelled, diving behind the walnut console table.

Suppressors hissed in the dark—ptht-ptht-ptht-ptht!—as high-velocity rounds tore through the plaster wall above Julian’s head, showering him in white drywall dust.
The siege of Kensington Vance Estate had begun.
