THE SILENT ALIBI / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - Messages from the Past

Julian walked slowly into his private study, closing the heavy oak doors behind him to secure complete solitude. He sat down in the leather armchair by the cold fireplace, setting the tablet on his lap.

The room was quiet, save for the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. He pressed play on the video screen.

The image flickered to life. The lighting was dark, lit only by the pale glow of a desk lamp. Clara appeared on the screen. She looked tired, pale, with dark circles under her eyes, but her expression was fierce, possessed by a quiet, unstoppable determination.

"Julian," her voice came through the small tablet speaker, soft, clear, and hauntingly familiar. "If you're watching this, it means I was wrong to think I could handle Victoria on my own. It means she found out what I discovered."

Julian pressed his hand against his mouth, tears instantly welling in his eyes at the sound of her voice.

"I know you think I've been losing my mind these past few months," Clara continued on the recording, taking a shaky breath. "I know the doctors said it was post-partum anxiety, and I let you believe it because I wanted to protect you from the truth. But the memory loss, the confusion... it wasn't in my head, Julian. Victoria has been poisoning my tea with low doses of scopolamine for months. She wanted me deemed mentally unfit so she could take control of my trust fund and push the Sterling merger through."

Julian felt a wave of icy nausea wash over him. It hadn't been post-partum depression at all. Victoria had been systematically drugging her under his own roof.

"I found the hidden offshore ledgers yesterday," Clara’s video self explained, holding up a small black flash drive to the camera. "The Sterling firm is bankrupt, Julian. They've been stealing from your family's foundation for five years. Victoria didn't just come into our lives as a friend—she was sent by her father to secure your wealth before their empire collapsed."

Clara stepped closer to the camera, her tear-stained face filling the frame.

"I am going to meet her at the lake house tonight to confront her," Clara whispered. "I'm bringing a recorder. I hope I can force her to sign a confession and leave our family forever. But if something happens to me... please know that I loved you with every piece of my heart. Kiss Emma for me every single morning. Protect our little girl, Julian. Don't let them take our home."

The screen faded to black.

Julian sat in the dark study, holding the tablet against his chest, his shoulders shaking with silent, uncontrollable sobs. The final pieces of the tragic puzzle had clicked into place. Clara hadn't died a victim of her own mind; she had died a warrior fighting to defend her family from a den of snakes.
