Chapter 12 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a record speed for a high-profile murder trial.

When the courtroom bell rang, signaling that a verdict had been reached, the gallery packed tightly once again. The air was charged with electric anticipation. Julian sat in his row, holding a small silver locket containing Clara’s picture tightly in his hand.

Victoria was escorted back into the room by two armed guards. Her head was held high, her chin jutting out in a final display of defiant arrogance, though her hands trembled visibly within her wrist cuffs.

"Has the jury reached a verdict?" Judge Hall asked.

The jury foreperson, a stern-looking woman in her late fifties, stood up holding a folded piece of paper. "We have, Your Honor."

The bailiff brought the paper to the judge, who reviewed it silently before handing it back.

"The defendant will please rise," Judge Hall commanded.

Victoria stood up beside her legal team. Her lawyer whispered something in her ear, but she ignored him, her eyes fixed on the foreperson.

"On the first count of First-Degree Premeditated Murder in the death of Clara Vance," the foreperson read aloud, her voice ringing clear, "we find the defendant, Victoria Sterling... Guilty."

A sharp, collective intake of breath swept through the gallery.

"On the second count of Attempted First-Degree Murder in the case of Emma Vance... Guilty."

"On the third count of Kidnapping... Guilty."

"On the fourth count of Grand Larceny and Financial Fraud... Guilty."

With every repetition of the word, Victoria seemed to shrink, as if an invisible physical weight was crushing her down. The defiant posture broke. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed back into her chair, her face burying into her cuffed hands as low, dry sobs racked her body.

Richard Sterling, watching from the second row in a gray prison jumpsuit of his own, closed his eyes and hung his head in absolute defeat. The Sterling empire was officially erased.

Judge Hall struck her gavel against the wooden block with a loud, resounding crack.

"Sentencing will take place immediately," Judge Hall declared, her voice devoid of mercy. "Victoria Sterling, for the cold, calculated, and monstrous acts you have committed against Clara Vance and a helpless child, this court sentences you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on count one, to be served consecutively with fifty years for attempted murder and kidnapping. You will spend the remainder of your natural life within the walls of the Maximum Security Correctional Facility for Women. Court is adjourned."

Crack!

The gavel fell one final time.

As the guards pulled Victoria to her feet to drag her out through the side door, she looked back over her shoulder at Julian. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, filled with a frantic, pathetic desperation.

Julian didn't smile. He didn't gloat. He simply stood up, adjusted his coat, and turned his back on her, walking out of the courtroom toward the sunlight streaming through the front doors.
