Chapter 14 - Rebuilding the Sanctuary

Spring arrived with a vibrant explosion of color across the Berkshire hills. The green lawns bloomed with wild daffodils, and the ancient oaks blossomed with fresh leaves.

The St. Jude Estate had undergone a total transformation. The dark, oppressing aura that had hung over the house during Victoria’s presence was entirely gone. The heavy velvet curtains had been replaced with light, breezy linen, letting natural sunlight flood every hallway and room.

In the east wing gallery, where the horrific discovery had been made six months ago, there were no more heavy, stolen masterpieces. The broken wall had been replaced by a long, beautiful sunroom featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked a new flower garden.

Emma, now eight years old, sat at a low wooden table in the center of the sunroom, her hair tied in bright ribbons, happily painting with watercolors. Sunlight bathed her small shoulders as she dipped her brush into yellow paint, carefully painting a bright sun over a meadow of purple flowers.

Julian walked into the room carrying a tray with two glasses of fresh lemonade. He set it down beside her, sitting on a low stool.

"That's beautiful, sweetheart," Julian said softly, looking at her artwork.

"It's Mommy's garden," Emma said proudly, pointing her brush at the purple flowers. "She told me in a dream last night that purple was her favorite color now."

Julian felt a warm, peaceful sensation settle deep in his chest. "She always loved lavender," he smiled, running his hand gently over Emma's hair. "You remembered."

"Daddy?" Emma set her brush down and looked up at him with her large, clear blue eyes—eyes that looked so remarkably like Clara’s.

"Yes, Emma?"

"Are we going to be okay now?" she asked, her voice small, free of the fear that had shadowed her for two long years.

Julian looked around the sunlit room, then out at the green gardens stretching toward the mountains. The dark secrets, the poisonous lies, and the shadows of betrayal had all been pulled out into the light and burned away.

"We are more than okay, Emma," Julian answered, pulling her into a warm hug. "We are free."
