Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

Julian’s advance was measured, silent, and terrifyingly deliberate. Victoria, caught in the residual rush of her horrific outburst, suddenly realized the physical danger she was in. She took two quick steps backward, her heavy satin train catching on the carved wooden edge of the communion rail.

"Julian... stay back!" she yelled, her confidence fracturing once again. She reached frantically into the arrangement of altar flowers, pulling out a heavy, sharp silver candle-snuffer with a pointed decorative tip, holding it out like a improvised knife. "Don't come near me!"

"You breathed the same air as my wife while planning her death," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he reached the top of the altar platform. "You tucked my daughter into bed every night with the same hands that held Clara under the water."

"She was nothing!" Victoria screamed, thrusting the silver tip toward his chest.

Julian didn't even attempt to dodge. He grabbed her wrist with lightning speed, squeezing the pressure point until her fingers opened involuntarily and the silver utensil clattered against the stone floor. He didn't strike her. Instead, he pulled her close, forcing her to look into his eyes from mere inches away.

"You took everything from Clara," Julian whispered into her ear, his breath cold against her cheek. "But you won't take another second of my life."

Sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, their high-pitched blare echoing through the thick stone walls of the estate chapel. The real police had finally arrived, called by one of the estate guards who had witnessed the initial chaos in the hallway.

Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "Julian, please... we can fix this. My father has millions in overseas accounts. We can leave! We can start over!"

Julian released her arm with a flick of disgust, letting her stumble backward against the communion table. White flower arrangements tumbled down around her, covering her pristine wedding dress in broken stems and scattered petals.

The heavy wooden doors of the church were pushed open once again, and four uniformed police officers, accompanied by detectives, rushed down the central aisle, their weapons drawn.

"Victoria Sterling!" the lead detective called out, his voice booming through the sanctuary. "Hands where we can see them! Do not move!"

Victoria collapsed onto her knees amidst the ruined lilies, her hands shaking as she held them in the air. The pristine bride, moments away from inheriting an empire, was now surrounded by armed officers, her face pale, smeared with mascara and gray plaster dust she had picked up from handling Emma.

As the officers moved in to place the steel handcuffs around her wrists, Victoria locked eyes with Julian one last time.

"You tricked me," she hissed, her voice dripping with poison. "There was no recorder in the wall."

Julian leaned down slightly, his voice a low, chilling whisper. "There didn't need to be. You confessed to a room full of two hundred witnesses and fifty active smartphone cameras. Enjoy the rest of your life in a cell, Victoria."
