Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Julian held the small digital recorder high above his head. The brushed metal caught the flickering candlelight from the aisle pillars.

"Clara never went anywhere without this," Julian said, his voice ringing out like a gavel in a courtroom. "She bought it on the advice of her therapist to log her daily mental progress. The night she died, her purse was found on the dock, but this recorder was missing. I searched for it for two years."

Victoria took a step back, her eyes wide, staring at the small device as if it were a venomous snake. Her breath came in short, jagged gasps, her pristine silk veil quivering with every violent rise and fall of her chest.

"I found it twenty minutes ago," Julian continued, lying with supreme confidence to test her reaction. "It was tucked inside the wall cavity where you hid my daughter. Clara recorded her final conversation on the dock, Victoria. Every single word."

Victoria’s composure fractured entirely. "That's impossible!" she screamed, her voice echoing violently against the stone arches of the chapel. "I searched her purse! I threw the—"

She stopped dead. The words hung suspended in the heavy air of the church like toxic gas.

The entire sanctuary went deathly quiet. Even the Sterling security guards stopped in their tracks, staring up at the bride in horrified disbelief.

Victoria’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes darting frantically across the sea of shock-filled faces staring back at her. She had just trapped herself. In her desperate bid to deny the existence of the tape, she had admitted to handling Clara’s purse on the night of her death—a fact she had denied to the state police during the initial investigation two years ago.

Richard Sterling turned slowly toward his daughter, his face devoid of color. "Victoria... what did you just say?"

"Father, no! He's tricking me!" Victoria babbled, her voice high-pitched and panicked. She tore at the lace sleeves of her wedding dress as if they were burning her skin. "He's manipulating the situation! He doesn't want to give me access to the trust fund! He's using Emma to ruin me!"

Emma squeezed Julian's hand tightly, leaning against his leg. "She took mommy's phone too," the little girl said, her voice small but remarkably clear in the dead silence. "She kept it in the locked drawer in her dressing room. I saw it."

Julian looked up at Victoria, a ghost of a dark, bitter smile touching his lips. He lowered the recorder—which was, in reality, completely blank, a desperate bluff that had paid off far beyond his expectations. But Emma’s mention of Clara's phone was real.

"The police are already on their way," Julian lied smoothly, keeping the pressure absolute. "And this time, the Sterling money won't save you."
