Chapter 6 - The Confession's Echo

Victoria stood isolated at the altar, surrounded by white lilies and golden candlelight, yet she looked entirely trapped. Her eyes darted from the heavy wooden exit doors at the back to the stained-glass windows along the sides. The social elite of the city, people who had kissed her cheeks and drank her champagne just an hour prior, were now shrinking away from her, whispering behind raised hands.

"You think you're so smart, don't you, Julian?" Victoria breathed, her voice dropping an octave into something cold, sharp, and entirely unrecognizable. The delicate heiress persona had vanished, shedding like old skin to reveal the psychopath beneath.

She tore her veil from her head, tossing the diamond tiara onto the stone steps where it clattered noisily.

"Clara was weak!" Victoria hissed, stepping down toward the main aisle, her bridal gown swishing violently against the floor. "She had everything! She had you, she had the Vance name, she had this estate—and all she did was whine about her anxiety and her fragile mental state! She was going to ruin everything you built!"

"So you drowned her?" Julian asked, his voice steady, keeping Emma tucked behind his back.

"She was going to pull your money out of the Sterling Investment Group!" Victoria yelled, her eyes wild. "She found the ledger errors! She was going to go to the District Attorney and destroy my father's firm! I did it for us, Julian! I saved your family from ruin!"

Richard Sterling stumbled back into his pew, clutching his chest as if he’d been struck by a physical blow. "Victoria... shut your mouth!" he roared, but it was far too late.

"I gave her two pills to calm her down," Victoria continued, completely unspooling, fueled by a terrifying cocktail of narcissism and rage. "She trusted me! She took them right out of my hand. And when she couldn't keep her head above the water near the boat house, I just stood there and watched. It was so peaceful, Julian. She didn't even fight."

A collective gasp of horror reverberated through the church. Guests were visibly shaken; several women were crying, and men were pulling out their smartphones, secretly recording the brutal confession unfold.

"And Emma?" Julian demanded, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth threatened to shatter. "What was your plan for my daughter?"

Victoria looked down at the little girl, her lips curling into a cruel, pitying smirk. "She was an annoyance from the day I moved in. Always staring at me with those big, pathetic eyes, just like her mother. I was going to leave her in that wall until tonight. After the reception, after we signed the marriage certificates. By the time anyone thought to look for her... it would have been another tragic accident. A sad little girl who wandered off and got trapped."

Julian felt a cold fire ignite inside his chest. He handed Emma’s small ribbon leash of her flower basket to a trusted family friend sitting in the end pew.

"Stay with Mrs. Gable, Emma," Julian whispered softly.

Then, he turned back to Victoria and began walking up the altar steps.
