Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Chapel

The silence in the corridor was absolute, save for Emma's shaky, hitching breaths. Julian held his daughter, his eyes fixed on the dark cavity behind the torn wall. His mind raced back through the hazy, grief-stricken months following Clara’s death.

Clara’s body had been found in the estate's ornamental lake late one November evening. The coroner had ruled it an accidental drowning compounded by toxic levels of a prescribed sedative—a drug Clara had been taking for post-partum anxiety. Julian had accepted the tragedy because the alternative was too painful to bear. Victoria had been there to pick up the broken pieces of his life. She was Clara’s closest confidante, the woman who stepped in to manage the household, comfort Emma, and eventually, warm Julian's cold bed.

"Emma, look at me," Julian whispered, lifting the little girl’s chin. His hand was shaking. "What did you say? Look at Daddy."

"She thought I was sleeping in the dressing room," Emma sobbed, her tear-stained face pale under the bright crystal light above. "I was hiding behind the long dress rack to surprise her. I heard her on the phone... she said mommy found out about the offshore accounts. She said she had to push mommy into the water because mommy wouldn't stay quiet."

Julian felt an icy coldness seep into his veins. "Who was she talking to?"

"I don't know," Emma whimpered. "A man. But then her shoe clicked, and she saw my reflection in the mirror. She didn't scream. She just... smiled at me, Daddy. She grabbed my arm real hard, carried me down here, and shoved me into the dark wall behind the picture. She said if I made a sound, she’d put me in the lake with Mommy."

A terrifying clarity washed over Julian. Every small detail from the past two years—the mislaid medical records, Victoria’s subtle push for Julian to sign over Clara’s real estate holdings, the sudden "disappearance" of the lake house surveillance logs—aligned into a nightmare scenario. Victoria hadn't just stepped into Clara's life; she had systematically erased her.

"Breathe, Emma," Julian said softly, his tone suddenly shifting from panic to an eerie, unnatural calm. "You're with me now. Nobody is going to hurt you ever again."

He stood up, scooping Emma into his arms. The plaster dust coated the front of his black tuxedo, a stark white stain across his chest. He looked down at the crushed rose petals on the floor.

The sanctuary doors were less than fifty yards away. Inside were two hundred of the state’s most prominent figures: judges, politicians, high-society heirs, and the national press covering the union of the Vance and Sterling dynasties.

Julian set Emma down gently on her feet. "Hold my hand," he instructed softly. "Don't look at anyone else. Just look at me."

Emma squeezed his fingers tightly. Her small body was still trembling, but she nodded, trusting her father implicitly.

Julian adjusted his bow tie with his free hand. The softness in his expression evaporated, replaced by a cold, deadly resolve. He turned toward the double doors of the chapel, his footsteps echoing like gunshot reports down the silent hall.
