Chapter 2 - The Cry in the Shadows

The heavy clatter of iron and glass crashing against the oak floor had barely died down when footsteps pounded frantically across the hallway rug outside.
"Nora? What was that noise?!"
A young woman burst into the kitchen. It was Chloe. She was in her late twenties, wearing a simple cream-colored silk shirt tucked into dark trousers, her long brown hair flowing wildly over her shoulders. Her face, normally composed and cautious, instantly collapsed into horror as her eyes swept across the devastation on the floor.
The shattered glass. The spilled juice. The cast-iron skillet resting in a puddle of grease.
And at the center of it all, lying prone and unmoving, was the elder woman in the lilac cardigan.
"Mom!" Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched wail of agony. She dropped to her knees without hesitation, ignoring the sharp glass shards that bit into her trousers. She reached out with trembling hands, sliding them beneath the unconscious woman's head, pulling her torso up against her lap. "Mom! Open your eyes! Mom, please!"
Nora’s body was heavy, pliable, and entirely unresponsive. Her face was pale, her lips slightly parted, a faint trail of blood trickling from behind her ear down her neck, staining the pristine lilac fabric of her cardigan. Chloe pressed her palm against Nora’s cheek, her tears spilling instantly, falling onto the elderly woman’s cool skin.
"What did you do?!" Chloe screamed, snapping her head up toward Rachel. "What did you do to her?!"
Rachel did not cringe. She did not show a single trace of panic or remorse. Instead, she adjusted her red apron with slow, methodical precision, brushing a speck of dust off her sleeve. She looked down at Chloe and the unconscious body with an unsettling, cruel satisfaction, her eyes glowing with an unholy light.
"She asked for it," Rachel said softly, her voice dripping with venomous pleasure. "She thought she could threaten me. She thought she was the master of this house."
"You killed her!" Chloe sobbed, clutching Nora closer to her chest, rocking back and forth on the stained wooden floor. "You monster! Help me! Call an ambulance!"
Rachel stepped closer, towering over the two women on the floor. She pointed a long, calloused finger directly at Chloe’s face, her grin widening into a terrifying sneer.
"She finally knows her place," Rachel sneered, her tone cold enough to freeze the blood in Chloe's veins. "And if you know what's good for you, girl, you'll remember yours."
Without another word, Rachel turned on her heel. She tossed the rolling pin onto the island counter with a dull thud, ripped the red apron off over her head, threw it over a chair, and marched out of the kitchen toward the rear exit that led to the estate's service drive. The heavy oak door slammed shut behind her, the lock clicking into place, leaving Chloe alone in the silence of the sunlit kitchen with the dying woman in her arms.

Chloe gasped for air, her tears blinding her as she fumbled frantically with her dark trousers, her hand searching her pockets. She found her phone, pulling it out with shaking fingers. Her screen was smudged with grease and tears, but she managed to swipe it open, her thumb hovering frantically over the dial pad to enter the emergency number.
"Hold on, Mom," Chloe sobbed, pressing her forehead against Nora’s cool gray hair. "Hold on, please... I'm calling for help... I won't let her get away with this..."
