Chapter 3 - The Mirror's Lie

Chloe’s thumb hit the screen, but before the call could connect, a sound froze her completely.

It was not the sound of the wind outside, nor the ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer. It was the soft, rhythmic click-clack of orthopedic heels descending the grand wooden staircase just beyond the kitchen archway.

Chloe froze. Her breath caught in her throat. The phone remained pressed against her ear, emitting a low, hollow dial tone that sounded impossibly distant.

Slowly, carefully, Chloe turned her head toward the threshold of the kitchen.

Stepping into the warm morning light that filtered through the arched entryway was an elderly woman. She moved with unhurried, graceful precision, her back perfectly straight, her head held high.

She was wearing a cream-colored cardigan fastened with silver buttons over a dark silk blouse. Around her neck hung a double strand of luminous, flawless pearls. Her short, wavy hair was perfectly styled, glowing silver under the lights.

It was Nora.

Chloe’s eyes went wide, her pupils dilating in sheer, paralyzing terror. She looked down at the woman cradled in her arms—the woman in the lilac cardigan, whose blood was currently soaking into the cream fabric of Chloe's own trousers. Then she looked back up at the woman standing in the doorway.

They were identical.

The facial structure, the lines around the eyes, the slight arch of the left eyebrow, the thin, stoic lips—it was the exact same face. But where the woman on the floor was broken, bleeding, and unconscious, the woman in the doorway was healthy, vibrant, and utterly composed. Her sharp gray eyes swept over the shattered glass, the spilled food, and finally landed on Chloe kneeling in the carnage with the bleeding body in her lap.

The woman in the cream cardigan did not scream. She did not run forward. She merely narrowed her eyes, a deep, penetrating suspicion washing over her features as she raised one hand to touch her pearl necklace.

"Did... did you plan this?" the elderly woman asked, her voice calm, icy, and sharp as a razor.

Chloe’s jaw worked silently, but no sound came out. Her mind raced, violently trying to reconcile the impossibility before her eyes. The phone slipped from her fingers, clattering against the hardwood floor.

"Wh... who are you?" Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator.

The woman in the cream cardigan took three slow steps forward, her shoes clicking against the oak floor. She stopped just outside the pool of spilled orange juice, looking down at Chloe with an expression that was devoid of any maternal warmth.

"I asked you a question, Chloe," the woman said, her voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing whisper. "Is this how you intended to take control of my estate? By bringing a killer into my kitchen?"

"No!" Chloe cried out, terror gripping her chest like an iron vice. "No, Mom! I thought... I thought this was you! She attacked her! Rachel attacked her!"

The woman in the cream cardigan looked down at the unconscious double lying in Chloe’s lap. A small, cold smile flickered at the corner of her mouth for a fraction of a second before vanishing into a stone mask.

"That woman on the floor is not your mother, Chloe," she whispered softly. "And if you don't start explaining who she is right now... I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in a concrete cell."
