Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Saint-Martin

The air in the kitchen grew so cold that Chloe felt as if she were breathing frost. She looked down at the woman she was holding. Up close, beneath the smear of blood and the pallor of trauma, subtle differences began to emerge—differences that her blind panic had previously obscured. The skin around the jawline of the woman in the lilac cardigan bore faint, surgical scars hidden behind the earlobes. The hands, though aged, lacked the heavy liver spots that had marked her mother’s skin for the past decade.
This was an imitation. A biological forgery.
"She... she looks just like you," Chloe stammered, her voice shaking violently as she slowly withdrew her arms from beneath the unconscious woman's back. She backed away on her hands and knees, scrambling away from the body until her back struck the base of the kitchen island. "I swear to God, I didn't know! I came downstairs because I heard the crashing! I saw Rachel hit her with the rolling pin!"
The woman in the cream cardigan—the true Nora Saint-Martin—walked toward the counter, stepping over a shard of glass without looking down. She picked up a linen napkin, slowly wiping a speck of dust from her fingers.
"Rachel was hired three weeks ago," Nora said, her tone horrifyingly analytical. "Recommended by a boutique placement firm in London. A firm whose board of directors, if I am not mistaken, includes your husband, Julian."
Chloe’s heart plummeted into her stomach. "Julian? What does Julian have to do with this?!"
"Julian has been drowning in debt since the collapse of his investment firm in May," Nora replied smoothly. She looked down at the duplicate on the floor with a detachment that was borderline sociopathic. "He needed my estate. He needed my signatures on the trust transfer documents. But I refused him. I told him three days ago that he would not see a single penny of the Saint-Martin inheritance until I was in the ground."
"No..." Chloe shook her head frantically, pulling her knees up to her chest. "Julian wouldn't... he loves me! He loves this family!"
"Julian loves survival," Nora corrected sharply. She walked over to the back door, examining the lock that Rachel had engaged before leaving. "He knew I would never sign. So he found someone who could replace me. Someone who, with a few months of coaching, could sign those documents, assume my identity, and live comfortably in a private care facility while he drained the accounts dry."
Nora turned back to face Chloe. The morning sun hit her face, illuminating the harsh, unyielding lines of a woman who had survived decades of high-society betrayals.
"The woman on the floor was meant to step into my life today," Nora continued softly. "And Rachel was brought in to ensure the real me disappeared silently into the fog. But it seems your husband’s little operation suffered a fatal error in communication."

"What error?" Chloe gasped, her eyes darting between her mother and the bleeding duplicate.
"Rachel didn't strike me," Nora said, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the body in the lilac cardigan. "She struck the replacement."
