Chapter 8 - The Arrival of the Architect

Thirty minutes passed like hours.
The blood on the kitchen floor had been hastily wiped away by Chloe, though a dark, phantom stain remained deep in the grain of the oak wood. Victoria sat bound and gagged inside the pantry, locked behind a heavy wooden door.
Nora sat at the dining table, wearing her cream cardigan, a fresh cup of tea resting in front of her. Chloe stood by the window, her silhouette tense, watching the long gravel driveway that stretched toward the iron gates of the estate.
A low, mechanical rumble echoed through the quiet valley.
A sleek, black Range Rover pulled into the estate drive, its tires crunching heavily over the wet gravel. It came to a stop near the front portico. The driver's door opened, and Julian stepped out.
He was a handsome man in his mid-thirties, dressed in an expensive charcoal suit with a tailored dark coat. He carried a leather briefcase in his right hand. His posture was confident, almost triumphant, though his eyes darted nervously toward the upper windows of the mansion as he adjusted his silk tie.
"He's here," Chloe whispered, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.
"Remember your part," Nora said, her voice entirely flat as she took a sip of her tea. "You are shocked. You are grieving. You are compliant."
The front door opened, and Julian’s heavy leather shoes echoed down the long marble hallway toward the kitchen. He stepped into the light of the dining room, his face wearing a carefully rehearsed expression of dark, solemn concern.
"Chloe? Nora?" Julian called out, stopping near the threshold. His eyes swept over the room, instantly noticing the damp spot on the floor and the subtle lingering scent of metallic iron and bleach.
Chloe turned around from the window, her face pale, her eyes red from real, terrified tears. She did not speak; she simply looked at him with an expression that Julian interpreted as utter despair.
"Julian," Nora spoke up, setting her teacup down with a soft chime. "You arrived quickly."
Julian’s eyes locked onto Nora—the woman in the cream cardigan sitting at the head of the table. A tiny, nearly imperceptible flicker of relief flashed across his eyes. He believed he was looking at Victoria. He believed the replacement was already seated on the throne.
"I came as soon as I heard," Julian said, stepping deeper into the room, his voice dropping into a somber, comforting register. "Victoria called me... she said there was an incident with Rachel."
He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small leather folder containing several thick stacks of legal documents.
"Where is... the other one?" Julian asked softly, leaning over the table, keeping his voice low so as to not be overheard by potential household staff. "Where did Rachel put the body?"

Nora looked up at him, her gray eyes piercing straight through his charming facade.
"The body," Nora said softly, "is currently waiting for you in the pantry."
