Chapter 7 - The Cold Calculation

Nora sat quietly in her chair for several long moments, her chin resting on her steepled fingers. The grandfather clock in the hall struck nine rhythmic, echoing chimes. Outside, the morning fog began to roll back over the estate grounds, revealing the sharp, dark silhouettes of the pine trees lining the driveway.
"Mom," Chloe said, stepping forward. "We have the proof now. Victoria confessed. We call the police, we have Julian arrested at the bank, and we end this."
Nora did not move. "And what happens to you, Chloe?"
Chloe blinked. "What?"
"You are his wife," Nora said, turning her icy gaze toward her daughter. "Your name is on his joint bank accounts. Your signature is on his corporate filings. When the police arrest Julian Vance for conspiracy to commit murder, do you truly believe his high-priced defense attorneys won't drag you into the mud with him? They will claim you were the insider. They will claim you supplied the floor plans of this house, the schedules, the security codes."
"I didn't!" Chloe yelled, her voice trembling. "I swear I didn't!"
"It doesn't matter what you did, child," Nora said coldly. "It matters what can be proven in a court of law. A desperate man will burn his own wife to save himself from a life sentence."
Chloe felt the room spinning around her again. The trap was absolute. Julian hadn't just built a system to eliminate her mother; he had constructed a cage that would lock Chloe inside it whether the plan succeeded or failed.
"Then what do we do?" Chloe whispered, total hopelessness breaking her spirit. "What do we do?"
Nora stood up from her chair. She walked over to the kitchen island, picked up the highball glass that had remained standing, and filled it with cold water from the tap. She walked over to Victoria, pouring the water slowly over the duplicate’s bloody face to clear her vision.
Victoria spluttered, coughing violently.
"You are going to make that call, Victoria," Nora instructed, her tone terrifyingly absolute.
Victoria looked up, blinking water from her lashes. "What?"
"You are going to call Julian," Nora commanded. "You are going to tell him that Rachel completed the task. You will tell him that the body has been secured in the cellar, and that he needs to come to the house immediately to sign the preliminary transfer papers before the bank closes."
"No..." Victoria stammered. "He'll know... he'll realize something is wrong—"
"He will realize nothing," Nora cut her off sharply. "Because if you do not make that call, Victoria, I will personally drag you to the cliff edge at the back of this property, throw you into the sea, and tell the police that an intruder attacked my house. You do not exist on any official register in this country anymore, do you? Zurich made sure of that."
May you like
Victoria stared into Nora’s eyes and saw no mercy. None at all. She nodded weakly, her spirit entirely broken.
"Good," Nora smiled grimly. She looked at Chloe. "Pick up her phone, Chloe. It's time to invite your husband to breakfast."
