THE SILENT REPLACEMENT / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - The Web of Julian

The realization settled over the room like toxic ash. The housekeeper had not been trying to eliminate Nora on her own accord; she had been executing a hit—a violent removal of an asset that had perhaps outlived its usefulness or made a fatal misstep in the plan. Or worse, Rachel had mistaken the replacement for the real Nora, striking down the very puppet Julian had paid to create.

Chloe dragged herself to her feet using the counter for support. Her knees were stained red with the duplicate’s blood, her hands trembling so severely she could barely keep her balance.

"If Rachel thought she was hitting you..." Chloe breathed, her mind putting the horrific puzzle together piece by piece, "...then Rachel was hired to murder you. To clear the way for her." She pointed a shaking finger at the woman on the floor.

"Precisely," Nora said coldly. "And when you arrived, Rachel assumed you were part of the cleanup crew. That is why she told you to know your place. She believed you were in on Julian’s scheme."

"I knew nothing about this!" Chloe shrieked, tears springing to her eyes again. "You have to believe me, Mom! I came here this morning to bring you your medications! I didn't know Julian was in debt! I didn't know about any replacement!"

Nora observed her daughter with a cold, calculating gaze. For five agonizing seconds, the silence stretched, broken only by the faint, agonizing groans of the unconscious woman on the floor. The duplicate was beginning to stir, her fingers twitching against the stained oak floorboards, her eyelids fluttering weakly.

"She's waking up," Chloe whispered, taking a step back in horror.

Nora did not flinch. She walked calmly to the drawer near the stove, pulled out a long, heavy nylon zip-tie—normally used for securing trash bags—and tossed it to Chloe.

"Tie her hands," Nora commanded.

"What?! Mom, we need to call the police! We need an ambulance!"

"If you call the police now, Chloe," Nora said, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying authority, "the news of this will break before noon. The Saint-Martin stock will plunge fifty percent by market close. The estate will be frozen in litigation, and Julian’s lawyers will turn this into a circus. I will not have my life's work destroyed by your husband's stupidity. Tie her hands."

Chloe stared at the zip-tie, then at her mother's unyielding eyes. Fear, habit, and a deep-seated instinct to obey her formidable mother took over. She dropped to her knees, grabbed the duplicate’s limp, bruised wrists, and pulled the nylon strip tight until it clicked securely into place.

The duplicate groaned, her eyes fluttering open completely. She blinked, her vision unfocused, looking up at the ceiling of the kitchen.

"R... Rachel?" the duplicate rasped, her voice thick, slurred by the trauma to her skull. "Is it... is it done?"

Nora stepped into the duplicate’s field of vision, leaning down until her face was mere inches from the woman who bore her exact likeness.

"No, my dear," Nora whispered, her voice laced with venom. "It is just beginning."
