Chapter 1 - The Sterile Labyrinth

The St. Jude Children’s Hospital smelled of diluted bleach, industrial floor wax, and the cold, unmistakable tang of oxygen tanks. High above the polished linoleum, fluorescent strip lights hummed with a low, oppressive frequency that seemed to vibrate straight into the skull.
Inside Room 412, the air was thick, heavy with the artificial warmth of medical monitors and the steady, rhythmic beep-beep-beep of a pulse oximeter. Lily, an eight-year-old girl with pale skin and dark circles stamped under her eyes, lay propped up on light pink hospital bedding. A clear plastic oxygen cannula curved under her nose, the thin tubes resting over her ears like glass threads.
Standing beside the bed, his back rigid, was Arthur—a middle-aged man with dark, disheveled hair and a faded green moss-colored utility jacket. His jaw was set so tightly that the muscles in his neck strained against his collar.
The door to Room 412 swung open without a knock.
Helen Hart stepped into the frame, her presence instantly absorbing every particle of light in the room. She was an elderly woman who commanded attention through sheer, unyielding posture—her silver-gray hair styled into a flawless, high chignon, not a single strand out of place. Her dark plum-colored blazer, fitted with heavy silver buttons, caught the cool blue-gray ambient light of the hospital walls.
"You shouldn't be here, Helen," Arthur snapped, his voice dropping into a guttural growl as he immediately stepped forward, placing his body as a physical shield between the woman and his daughter. "Step away from my daughter."

Helen didn't flinch. She didn't even look at Arthur. Her eyes, sharp, cold, and dark as obsidian, remained locked on the small child on the bed. Ignoring Arthur's outstretched arm, she took two swift, deliberate steps forward, leaning down over the metal bed rail until her lips were mere inches from Lily’s small ear.
"Tell them your father forgot your medicine," Helen whispered, her voice a silky, venomous hiss.
