Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Leverage
Outside the hospital, three stories down in the main parking lot, a black luxury sedan sat idling softly in the shadows beneath the concrete overhang.
Inside the rear passenger compartment, Michael Hart sat in tailor-made navy wool trousers and a cashmere sweater, his phone pressed to his ear. In his lap rested a sleek, military-grade tablet displaying a real-time telemetry feed—a live readout of Lily’s heart rate, blood pressure, and the exact volumetric drip-rate of the IV pump in Room 412.
"You always were the emotional one, Arthur," Michael said softly, his blue eyes reflecting the cool glow of the tablet screen. "Mother thought she could bully you into surrendering the family trust by playing house-servant games. She had no vision. She didn't realize that in order to control thirty million dollars in offshore assets, one doesn't need to kill the child—one simply needs to control the child's survival."
"You monster," Arthur’s voice rasped through the speaker. "She’s your niece! She’s eight years old!"
"And she is currently the sole legal beneficiary of the Hart Family Foundation," Michael replied, tapping a small key on his tablet that slightly altered the drip rate on the screen. "A foundation that specifies clear, absolute joint-guardianship authority. With Helen in police custody for attempted murder, the legal papers I filed this morning make me her primary medical decision-maker. You have no legal standing to authorize a surgical procedure or an emergency toxin extraction without my signature."

"I will kill you, Michael," Arthur said, the sentence coming out low, flat, and absolute. "I swear on my life, if you touch a hair on her head, I will hunt you down."
Michael smiled softly into the dark interior of the car. "You won't hunt anyone, Arthur. Because in exactly two minutes, you are going to walk out of that hospital, step into the police cruiser with the investigators, and confess that you were the one who bought the auto-injectors from the black-market supplier in Berlin."
