Chapter 10 - The Last Trap

The main lobby of St. Jude Children’s Hospital was vast, open, and bathed in the artificial glow of high-hanging architectural spotlights.
Michael Hart stood near the glass revolving doors at the main entrance, dressed in his cashmere sweater, flanked by two corporate attorneys holding leather briefcases. He looked relaxed, powerful, and triumphant—a man who had just successfully executed a corporate takeover of his family's vast fortune without firing a single bullet.
The heavy elevators at the back of the lobby opened with a soft chime.
Arthur stepped out onto the polished linoleum floor. He walked slowly, his hands resting inside the pockets of his faded green utility jacket, his face pale but completely unreadable.
Michael smiled, stepping forward to meet his brother in the middle of the lobby floor.
"You made the right choice, Arthur," Michael said, extending a hand toward him. "Lily will have the best care money can buy. I'll make sure of it."
Arthur stopped three feet away from Michael. He didn't take his hand. Instead, he slowly reached into his right jacket pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object.
It was not a weapon. It was a secondary, black-cased digital recording receiver—the master hub linked directly to Lily's teal smartwatch.
On its small OLED screen, a red recording indicator was flashing steadily, accompanied by a tiny, active wireless upload icon that read: BROADCAST LIVE TO FEDERAL DISTRICT ATTORNEY.
Michael’s smile froze. The color drained from his face as he looked down at the tiny screen.
"You thought Lily's watch was just a toy, Michael?" Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark whisper that filled the quiet lobby. "You thought Helen was the only one being recorded?"
From behind the marble pillars surrounding the lobby, six armed federal agents in tactical gear stepped into the light, their rifles raised and aimed directly at Michael’s chest.
"Michael Hart!" the lead agent roared, his voice echoing off the high glass walls. "Hands where we can see them! Drop to your knees now!"
Michael looked at Arthur, his blue eyes wide with a sudden, absolute, paralyzing horror. The tablet inside his jacket slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the hard floor and shattering into a hundred pieces.

Arthur stepped closer to his brother, leaning in until his breath touched Michael's ear.
"The fourteen-hour war is over, Michael," Arthur whispered softly. "And you lost."
