Chapter 5 - The Glass Wall

The silence inside Room 412 turned razor-sharp.
Arthur’s gaze slowly drifted from his phone screen to the glass window embedded in the hospital door. Outside, in the brightly lit corridor, doctors and nurses moved past in surgical scrubs, their faces blurred by the frost on the reinforced glass. To anyone passing by, it was a quiet room where a sick child was recovering under the watchful eye of a loving father.
"Michael," Arthur whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the heart monitor. "Where are you?"
A dry, quiet laugh echoed through the earpiece. It was a cold, metallic sound, entirely devoid of warmth or remorse.
"I'm close enough to see the blue lights in the driveway, Arthur," Michael replied smoothly. "Helen was always too reckless. She thought small. She thought poison on a plate was an art form. She never understood that the real game was never about the estate—it was about the custody trust."
Arthur stood up from the vinyl chair, his left hand instinctively resting on Lily’s forehead, smoothing back her soft, dark hair. Lily looked up at him, sensing the sudden surge of terror radiating from her father’s body, though she remained silent.

"The police have the injector," Arthur said, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to maintain control. "They arrested her. It's finished."
"They have ONE injector, brother," Michael corrected softly, his voice dropping into a intimate, terrifying whisper. "The one Helen stole from your kitchen counter. They don't have the one currently connected to the IV bag hanging right above your daughter's head."
