Chapter 2 - The Digital Trap

Arthur lunged forward to pull Helen back, but before his hands could make contact, Lily shifted her weight against the pillows.

The eight-year-old child did not turn away, nor did she flinch from the towering matriarch. Slowly, deliberate as a adult witness on a stand, Lily raised her left arm from under the blanket. Wrapped around her thin wrist was a bright teal children’s smartwatch—its small digital screen glowing softly in the clinical dimness.

Lily looked directly into Helen’s eyes, her small voice cutting through the sterile room with terrifying clarity.

"I saw you switch the plates," Lily said, her breathing even through the nasal cannula. "My watch recorded everything."

For a fraction of a second, time inside Room 412 seemed to fracture.

Helen’s immaculate composure shattered into raw, ugly pieces. Her shoulders stiffened, her chin jerked back, and her dark eyes widened until the whites showed completely around her pupils. The calculated arrogance that had defined her for sixty years evaporated, replaced by a sudden, violent flicker of panic.

"You're confused!" Helen barked, her voice pitching an octave higher than usual, a sharp, ragged sound that echoed off the blue-gray walls. "The child is hallucinating from the fever, Arthur! Look at her—she doesn't know what she's saying!"

"She knows exactly what she's saying," Arthur said softly, his voice dropping from anger into an icy, dangerous calm.
