Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Line

The heavy footfalls of the officers dragging Helen Hart down the tiled corridor slowly faded into the background hum of the hospital ward.
Inside Room 412, the sudden absence of Helen’s suffocating presence left a vacuum so absolute it felt cold. Arthur sank into the vinyl armchair beside the bed, his shoulders slumping as if a concrete weight had been removed from his chest. He reached over, taking Lily's small, warm hand in his own.
Lily looked up at him, her eyes wide, dark, and filled with a exhaustion far beyond her eight years.
"Is it over, Dad?" Lily asked softly, her chest rising and falling rhythmically beneath the pink blanket.
The lead investigator didn't answer right away. She stepped forward to the foot of the hospital bed, pulling a thick, official yellow envelope from her inner coat pocket. She extended it toward Arthur.
"No," the investigator said, her tone dark, guarded, and heavy with unspoken warnings. "Michael signed the guardianship papers an hour ago."
Arthur froze, his hand tightening slightly on Lily's fingers. Before he could speak, the smartphone in his green utility jacket began to vibrate violently, its ringtone buzzing against his chest like a trapped horn.
Arthur reached into his pocket with a trembling hand and pulled out the phone. The glowing screen displayed a single word in bold, white text:
MICHAEL
Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs. He slid his thumb across the screen and brought the phone to his ear, his knuckles turning white. He didn't say a word.

"Did the doctors find the second injector?"
