Chapter 10 - The Price of Blind Trust

Upstairs in the hallway, the father and son stood alone beneath the light of the crystal chandeliers.

The immediate danger had passed, but the emotional wreckage left in its wake was vast and raw. Lucas stared down at his hands—the same hands that had just struck his father across the face. The physical pain in Marcus's jaw was beginning to dull into a deep ache, but the psychological bruise on their relationship was far more dangerous.

"Dad..." Lucas choked out, his eyes filling with real, unscripted tears of remorse. "I... I don't even know what to say. I hit you. I actually hit you."

Marcus turned to face his son fully. He reached out, placing both hands on Lucas's bare shoulders, forcing the young man to look him directly in the eye.

"You reacted out of what you thought was protection, Lucas," Marcus said, his voice thick with emotion. "She spent six months learning how to manipulate your heart. She studied your weaknesses, your anger, and your loyalty. She turned your best instincts against me."

"I should have trusted you," Lucas sobbed, the tears finally overflowing, tracking down his cheeks. "I should have asked questions. I should have looked at you instead of just reacting. I was so blind, Dad. I was so angry at you for... for everything... that I wanted to believe she was right."

"We both made mistakes," Marcus said softly. "I kept secrets from you. I didn't tell you about the security upgrades, or about Arthur Vance, because I wanted to protect you from the ugliness of the past. By trying to shield you, I left you vulnerable to her."

The heavy oak doors downstairs echoed with the sharp, authoritative knocks of the responding police officers.

Marcus took a deep breath, wiping a stray drop of blood from the corner of his lip with his sleeve. He looked at his son, his expression resolute.

"We go down together," Marcus said firmly. "We tell them the absolute truth. We fix this family tonight, Lucas. No more secrets. No more blind spots."

Lucas wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and nodded slowly, stepping into line beside his father. Together, side by side, they walked down the grand marble staircase to face the consequences of the dark, into the light of the truth.
