Chapter 12 - The Fragile Dawn

By 4:00 AM, the estate had finally returned to a quiet stillness. The police cruisers had driven away, taking Clara Vance into the holding system of the city jail. The heavy oak doors were closed, locked, and secured once more.

In the small private kitchen off the main hall, far away from the grandeur of the marble corridors, Marcus sat at a small butcher-block table, holding a cloth wrapped around an ice pack against his swollen jaw. The room was lit only by the warm, amber glow of a single under-cabinet light.

Lucas walked in quietly, carrying two mugs of hot coffee. He placed one in front of his father and sat down across from him, staring down at his own hands.

"The doctor said your jaw isn't fractured," Lucas said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "Just deep soft-tissue bruising. You'll be sore for a few weeks."

"I've had worse," Marcus murmured, offering a faint, painful smile. "In my younger days on the construction sites, I took a falling timber to the shoulder. This is nothing."

Silence stretched between them—not the tense, toxic silence of the past six months, but a quiet, contemplative space where real understanding could finally take root.

"Why didn't you hit me back, Dad?" Lucas asked suddenly, looking up, his eyes earnest. "When I came at you... you could have defended yourself. You were a boxer in college. You could have laid me out before my punch even landed."

Marcus lowered the ice pack, looking at his son with steady, unyielding affection.

"A father doesn't strike his son to win an argument, Lucas," Marcus said quietly. "If I had hit you back, I would have proven her right in your eyes. I would have given her exactly what she wanted: a battle between us that would never end. Sometimes, you have to absorb the blow so the other person can see who is really swinging the punch."

Lucas dropped his head, a heavy sigh escaping his chest, feeling the profound truth of his father's words sink deep into his heart.
