Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Arthur Vance

The mention of her birth name hit the hallway like a thunderclap. Sophia—Clara—stared at Marcus, her jaw slack, her eyes wild with a fresh, terrifying wave of panic.

"You... you know?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Marcus slowly let his hand drop to his side, holding the phone firmly. "Did you really believe I wouldn't run a deep background check on the person residing in my home and redesigning the security blueprints of my estate?" Marcus asked, his tone quiet, measured, and devastatingly calm. "I knew who you were the second week you were here, Clara. I recognized your mother’s eyes the moment you walked into my study."

Lucas looked back and forth between his father and the woman he thought he loved, entirely lost in a maze of revelations he didn't understand. "Dad... what are you talking about? Who is Clara?"

Marcus turned his head slightly toward his son, his expression softening with sorrow. "Her name is Clara Vance, Lucas. She is Arthur Vance's daughter. She didn't come here to design rooms. She came here because she blames me for her father’s financial ruin fifteen years ago."

Clara slammed her hand against the marble wall, her face twisting in sudden, unbridled fury. "Because you did ruin him!" she shrieked, abandonting all pretense of innocence. "You stole the Harbor View project from under him! You bankrupted his firm! You sat in your mansion while my father died of a broken heart in a rented two-bedroom apartment!"

Marcus shook his head slowly, a deep sadness in his eyes. "Your father was a gambler, Clara. He leveraged his firm's assets on illegal offshore futures without telling his partners. When the market crashed, I absorbed his debts to keep his employees from losing their pensions. I didn't take his money; I saved sixty families from ruin, including yours. I paid your mother’s medical bills anonymously until the day she passed away."

"Lies!" Clara screamed, her voice echoing violently off the high ceilings. "You're a liar! You manipulate everything! You manipulated the market, you manipulated my father, and now you're manipulating this video!"

"The video is unedited, real-time cloud data," Marcus replied calmly. "And it has already been automatically uploaded to the central server of the city police department as part of an active intruder alert."

As if on cue, from far down the long, winding driveway of the estate, the distant, rhythmic wail of approaching police sirens broke through the night air, cutting through the silence of the marble halls.
