Chapter 11 - The Reckoning in the Foyer

The front doors swung open under the master override from Marcus’s phone, admitting four armed officers into the grand foyer. The room was instantly filled with the harsh, cold strobing of blue and red police lights, shattering the warm elegance of the estate.

Detective Sarah Reyes, a veteran investigator with sharp eyes and an unreadable expression, stepped inside first, her hand resting casually near her sidearm as she surveyed the scene. She saw Clara Vance huddled by the fountain, shivering in her golden robe, her face buried in her hands. She saw the two men descending the stairs—the father with a distinct red swell on his jaw, the son shirtless and pale with distress.

"Marcus Sterling?" Detective Reyes asked, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of the fountain.

"Yes, Detective," Marcus replied, stepping off the last stair. "Thank you for responding so quickly."

"We received an automated silent alarm accompanied by a real-time digital video upload from your address," Reyes said, holding up a secure digital tablet. "The dispatch operator flagged an ongoing domestic altercation and assault."

Lucas stepped forward, his head held high despite the intense shame visible in his posture. "Detective, I am the one who struck my father. I took a swing at him."

Reyes raised an eyebrow, looking from Lucas to the swelling on Marcus's face, then down at the tablet in her hands. "I’ve already reviewed the first two minutes of the cloud footage while in transit, Mr. Sterling," Reyes said, looking directly at Lucas. "The video clearly shows the sequence of events. It shows Miss Vance engineering a fake distress scenario, and it shows her deliberate attempt to incite a violent confrontation."

She turned her attention toward the fountain, walking over to stand above Clara, who refused to look up.

"Clara Vance," Reyes announced, her voice cold and professional. "You are being placed under arrest for filing a false emergency report, criminal harassment, and intent to commit extortion. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Two officers stepped forward, pulling Clara up from the marble floor. The golden satin robe, once a symbol of luxurious deception, now hung loose and messy around her as the steel handcuffs snapped shut around her wrists with a sharp, definitive click.
