Chapter 13 - The Trial of Evidence

Three weeks later, the preliminary hearing for the state versus Clara Vance took place in the downtown municipal courthouse.
The courtroom was quiet, filled only with the legal teams, a few representatives from the district attorney's office, and Marcus and Lucas Sterling sitting side by side in the front row of the gallery.
Clara sat at the defense table, wearing a dark gray jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a simple ponytail. She looked smaller without her golden robe, stripped of the grand stage of the Sterling estate. Her court-appointed attorney attempted to argue for an out-of-court diversion program, citing emotional distress and a history of family financial trauma.
The prosecutor stood up, holding a single black USB drive.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor declared, plugging the drive into the court's multimedia system. "The state presents Exhibit A: the raw, unedited 4K security footage recovered directly from the cloud servers of the Sterling estate on the night of the incident."
The large monitors in the courtroom flickered to life.
Once again, the video played. The sharp marble walls, the crystal chandeliers, the deliberate loosening of the gold satin robe, the calculated scream, the passive posture of Marcus Sterling, and the blinking red light of the camera in the corner.
The judge watched the video with an unreadable expression, his eyes narrowing as he observed the sheer level of calculation displayed on Clara’s face during the sequence.

"The evidence is unequivocal," the judge stated, turning his gaze toward the defense table. "This was not a spontaneous domestic misunderstanding. This was a premeditated, highly organized attempt to manufacture a criminal charge for the purpose of personal gain and emotional destruction. Bail is denied. The case will proceed to trial on all counts."
Clara didn't scream. She didn't cry out. She simply stared at the blank monitor screen as the bailiffs led her away, realizing that against the unyielding clarity of objective truth, her elaborate web of lies never stood a chance.
