Chapter 4 - The Sentinel on the Ceiling

Marcus leaned heavily against the cold marble, one hand clutching his swelling jaw. The world spun for a brief, dizzying second, the warm light of the chandeliers blurring into streaks of yellow gold. Pain radiated down his neck, sharp and throbbed rhythmically, but beneath the physical agony, a cold, crystalline clarity settled over his mind. He did not yell back. He did not raise his fists. He knew that matching Lucas’s aggression would only validate the lie that Sophia had so carefully constructed.
Slowly, deliberately, Marcus straightened his posture. He wiped his swollen lip with the back of his hand, his dark eyes locking onto his son with a profound, quiet sadness that made Lucas flinch ever so slightly.
"Look at me, Lucas," Marcus said, his voice low, raspy, but entirely steady. "Look at what you just did based on a show."
"A show?" Lucas sneered, gesturing wildly toward Sophia, who was still trembling against the wall, tears pouring down her face. "She’s terrified, Dad! She’s shivering! You think she’s making this up?"
Marcus didn't argue. He didn't offer a desperate defense. Instead, he slowly raised his right arm, extending a long, steady finger upward, pointing directly toward the far corner of the high, white ceiling where the decorative crown molding met the marble wall.
"I didn't touch her, Lucas," Marcus said quietly. "And you don't have to take my word for it. Look up."
Lucas hesitated, his brow furrowing in confusion. His rage, previously a blinding inferno, encountered its first obstacle of cold logic. Slowly, reluctantly, he tracked the direction of his father's outstretched finger.
Tucked neatly into the shadowed recess of the ceiling molding, virtually invisible unless explicitly looked for, sat a small, high-definition dome security camera. It was a recent addition—installed by Marcus three weeks ago during a routine upgrade to the estate’s security infrastructure, a detail he had deliberately kept quiet while investigating an internal inventory discrepancy in his private office.

As they watched, the tiny optical lens shifted slightly, its internal mechanism humming almost soundlessly, and a small, crimson LED light began to pulse rhythmically in the dark corner.
