Chapter 7 - The Interrogation of Silence

The mechanical hum of the central air conditioning was the only sound echoing through the grand corridor as the three figures remained locked in a frozen triangle. Marcus was the first to break the stillness. He reached into the deep pocket of his navy blue silk robe, his fingers wrapping around a small, sleek black smartphone. Without taking his eyes off Sophia, he tapped the screen twice, unlocking his master security application.

"Lucas," Marcus said softly, his voice devoid of anger, carrying only the weight of profound exhaustion. "Come here."

Lucas stepped forward slowly, like a man walking through a deep fog. His hands hung uselessly at his sides, his fists unclenching, his face pale with a mixture of shock and creeping shame. He stood beside his father, his eyes dropping to the glowing screen of the smartphone.

With a single swipe, Marcus accessed the live feed and the previous five minutes of recorded footage from Camera 04—Hallway North.

He hit play.

The video played with crystalline clarity in 4K resolution, complete with spatial audio. There, on the small screen, Lucas watched the exact sequence of events unfold in brutal, unassailable truth:

He saw his father walking peacefully down the hall, minding his own business. He saw Sophia step out from the side archway, look back to ensure Marcus was approaching, and then deliberately loosen her own robe. He heard her calculated, artificial gasps. He saw his father stop six feet away, raising his hands in immediate denial, saying clearly, "Sophia, what are you doing? I haven't touched you."

Then, the video showed Lucas charging into the frame like a blind bull, launching a violent blow directly into his father's face while Marcus stood entirely passive, offering no resistance whatsoever.

Every frame of the video was a sharp, searing iron against Lucas’s conscience. He watched himself commit a felony against his own father based entirely on a lie. He watched the subtle, sinister smile that had briefly crossed Sophia’s lips right before he struck the blow—a detail he had missed in his blind rage, but which the camera had captured with unforgiving precision.

"My God..." Lucas breathed, staggering back a step, his hand coming up to cover his mouth. He looked from the phone screen to Sophia, his eyes wide with revulsion. "My God, Sophia... you set me up. You used me to attack my own father."

Sophia’s composure finally shattered into jagged pieces. The delicate, victimized persona evaporated, replaced by a sharp, snarling desperation. She backed up until her spine hit the marble wall, her eyes darting toward the grand staircase at the end of the hall.

"It's not what it looks like!" she stammered, her voice losing its melodic sweetness, turning thin and harsh. "The camera angle is misleading! He... he threatened me earlier in the office! He told me he would ruin me if I didn't—"

"Stop talking, Clara," Marcus said firmly, using her real name for the first time.

Sophia froze, her breath catching in her throat as if she had been struck with cold water.
