Chapter 1 - THE WATER AND THE BONE

The kitchen was a sanctuary built on lies of polished quartz and high-end minimalism. Crisp daylight filtered through the expansive picture window, illuminating the spotless white cabinetry and casting long, cold shadows across the marble island top. Yet beneath the veneer of suburban perfection, the air smelled sharply of damp wool, ozone, and copper—the unmistakable iron tang of panic.
Clad in an elegant, fitted cream long-sleeve dress that betrayed no wrinkle, Clara stood over the kitchen island with her knees locked, her shoulders rigid with cold, deliberate tension. Her long dark hair cascaded over her back, framing a face contorted by an unyielding, cruel obsession. Resting on the glistening quartz counter was a heavy, galvanised metal water bucket, filled to the brim with icy tap water that rippled under the harsh recessed lights.
Forcibly pinned beneath Clara’s thin, vein-lined hands was the head of a little girl. Seven-year-old Lily thrashed violently, her pink floral dress kicking against the base of the cabinets, her tiny shoes making faint, desperate squeaks against the heated hardwood floor. Bubbles exploded in violent bursts to the surface of the bucket as Lily’s lungs screamed for oxygen. Water splashed over the rim, soaking Clara’s cream sleeves, but Clara did not flinch. Her knuckles were stark white, her knuckles locked like iron clamps around the nape of the child's neck.
"Be quiet," Clara hissed, her voice barely a whisper, vibrating with a chilling, erratic resonance. "You need to learn how to keep things clean. You need to wash it away, Lily."
Suddenly, the heavy oak front door crashed against the entry wall. Rapid, heavy footsteps thundered through the hallway, breaking through the suffocating stillness of the house.
Marcus burst through the open-concept entryway, his dark rain jacket dripping onto the rug. His eyes dilated in sheer, unadulterated terror as the horrific scene unfolded before him. Time seemed to fracture into disjointed, agonizing milliseconds: the gleam of the metal bucket, the splashing water, the helpless, violent spasms of his daughter.
"What are you doing?!" Marcus screamed, his voice cracking into a raw, gut-wrenching roar.
He sprinted across the polished floor, his boots losing traction for a fraction of a second before he hurled his weight directly into Clara. He grabbed Clara’s wrists with desperate force, yanking her hands off the back of the child's neck. Clara stumbled backward, her cream dress dripping wet, her eyes flashing with a sudden, glassy disorientation as if she had just been forcefully dragged out of a deep trance.
Lily collapsed onto the marble counter, coughing convulsively, gasping for air, water streaming from her blonde hair, soaked clothes, and shivering chin.
Marcus scooped the shivering child into his arms, pulling her dripping body tight against his chest. He backed away toward the dining table, his chest heaving, his heart hammering violently against his ribs like a trapped bird.
"Come here, I've got you," Marcus stammered, his fingers trembling uncontrollably as he wiped the cold water from Lily’s eyes and cheeks. "Are you okay? Look at me... Lily, look at Daddy!"

Lily’s small hands clung to the lapels of his dark jacket, her nails digging into the heavy fabric as her entire frame shook with violent, uncontrollable tremors. "Daddy... Daddy..." she sobbed, her voice a hollow, raspy whisper.
"I've got you, baby. You're safe," Marcus breathed, though every nerve in his body screamed that safety in this house had long since ceased to exist.
