Chapter 13 - THE RECOVERY OF TRUTH

The gunshot echoed into the grey sky, followed immediately by a heavy, wet thud against the grass.
Clara dropped to her knees, her silver handgun sliding harmlessly across the slick lawn. A red stain was spreading rapidly across her right shoulder where Detective Miller’s precise round had neutralized the threat before she could pull her own trigger.
Two officers surged forward, tackling her to the ground, pulling her arms behind her back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs over her wrists.
Clara thrashed against the mud, screaming incoherently, her dark hair plastered to her face, her cream dress torn and covered in brown sludge. The illusion of the sophisticated, elegant caretaker was gone forever, replaced by the pathetic reality of a exposed murderer.
Detective Miller holstered his weapon and ran toward Marcus, who had collapsed onto his knees beside the deck opening.
"You okay, Vance?" Miller asked, reaching down to help him up.
"Get my daughter," Marcus gasped, pointing toward the dark space beneath the deck. "Get Lily out."
Miller crouched down and gently pulled Lily out into the light. The little girl was crying, but as soon as she saw her father, she reached out her tiny arms, and Marcus gathered her into his lap, weeping silently as the rain poured over them both.
Paramedics rushed onto the lawn with thermal blankets and medical kits, wrapping both Marcus and Lily in warm foil sheets as they escorted them toward an awaiting ambulance.
As Marcus stepped into the back of the vehicle, holding Lily tight against his chest, he looked back one last time at the house.
Clara was being shoved into the back of a police cruiser, her face pressed against the glass, her mouth moving in silent, rage-filled curses.

Marcus reached into his pocket and felt the hard, metallic shape of Sarah’s USB drive.
We made it, Sarah, he thought, looking up at the rain-streaked sky. We're finally safe.
