Chapter 5 - THE THRESHOLD OF SHADOWS

The tension in the kitchen was a physical weight, crushing and suffocating. Clara didn't move for three full seconds, her eyes locked onto Marcus in a battle of wills. But as Marcus reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his cell phone, unlocking the screen with a single, deliberate movement, the defiance in her eyes wavered.
Without another word, Clara turned on her heel, her damp cream dress swishing violently around her legs, and retreated down the hallway toward the master suite. The sharp click of her high heels against the floor sounded like the ticking of a countdown timer.
The moment she disappeared around the corner, Marcus collapsed onto one knee, keeping Lily tightly wrapped in his arms. His entire body broke out into a cold sweat as the adrenaline crash hit him with the force of a hammer.
"Lily... baby, look at me," Marcus whispered, his hands trembling as he cupped her face. "Are you hurt anywhere else? Tell Daddy. Please."
Lily buried her wet face into the crook of his neck, her small hands clutching his dark coat as if it were the only anchor keeping her from floating away into the abyss. "My back... and my feet, Daddy. She put ice on my feet when I cried."
A sickening knot tightened in Marcus’s gut. Cruelty masked as discipline—systemic, calculated, and designed to leave minimal visible evidence beneath clothing.
"Okay. Okay, baby," Marcus said, choking back a sob. "We're leaving. Right now. We are not staying in this house another minute."
He stood up, carrying Lily toward the front door. He grabbed his car keys from the bowl on the entryway table. But as he reached for the chrome door handle, he heard a sound that made his heart stop dead in his chest.
It was the distinct, metallic sound of an electronic deadbolt sliding into place from the outside—followed immediately by the heavy hum of the central security system engaging.
A red light on the wall panel near the door began to blink rapidly.
SYSTEM LOCKED. PERIMETER SECURED.
Marcus dropped his hand from the handle and spun around. Through the glass panel of the front door, he saw Clara’s dark SUV parked in the driveway—and sitting on the hood was the main master controller for the smart home system, a custom unit he had installed himself, which allowed total lockdown of all smart glass windows and reinforced security shutters.

A high-pitched chime echoed through the house speakers, followed by Clara’s voice, amplified and distorted through the intercom system.
"You shouldn't have threatened me, Marcus," her voice purred, hollow and cold. "You really shouldn't have."
